Yeah, "Safe R" is probably an exaggeration. Republicans will to still have to fight and devote attention/resources to the race in order to hold the seat, but I still wouldn't bet much on a takeover. I am disappointed we won't get any crazy Bunning antics though.  The man brought a teleprompter to a debate in 2004. Who knows what he'd do with 6 more years of senility.

So would you agree to "Likely R" or "Lean R"?

I'm in the "Lean R" camp, myself. Jack Conway isn't Barack Obama and 2010 won't be 2006, but it won't be 2004, either.

Thus Conway's greatest strength in Kentucky.

Trey Greyson for Kentucky!  Real Conservatism, not phony Populism that southern Dems offer!

Yeah, instead of just the opening and closing statements, we may have been able to see him using a teleprompter the whole debate.

Or he can just prerecord it all.

Wouldn't someone need to stand there to press play/stop on the tape recorder?

So the race goes from pure toss-up to Lean, if not Likely Republican.  Even with Bunning in the running (hey, it rhymes!), I still think this seat would've been a bit of a long shot, albeit not as much as it is now.  Let's see how this one plays out...

Agree. The race would have been Tossup had Bunning decided to run again, but seeing as how he's not, I think the race shifts into the Leans Republican category, especially if Secretary of State Trey Grayson gets the nomination. I still think Attorney General Jack Conway (D) is the best candidate we can get, and he'd certainly make the race competitive, but depending on the national atmosphere going into 2010, I think as it stands right now the Republicans will probably hold the seat. Phooey. Sad Shine on Kentucky...

Considering Bunning nearly lost to a nobody in a great Republican year last time, hiding his dementia until October, it would have been at least Likely D. He was not Strom Thurmond.

I say Lean R for now. Grayson is a strong candidate for the Rs and certainly the best they could have come up with, but he's not a superstar, and Conway is at least as strong for the Ds. So it comes down to the state's lean and the presumption Grayson runs a competent campaign.
