So says the New York Times.

Silver is a corrupt jerk who has been Assembly Speaker since the 1990s.  Assembly Democrats will have no choice but to dump Silver now.  Governor Cuomo will likely be instrumental in determining who would be the next Speaker.

There was talk of Assembly Republicans entering into a coup with some Assembly Democrats to dump Silver before this happened.  Their votes will probably not be necessary.

Silver is stepping down as speaker, per the New York Daily News.  A committee of 5 Assemblymen will take his place while the trial process is ongoing.

There won't be a five-headed hyrdra in charge.  Majority Leader Joseph Morelle of Rochester will serve as interim speaker until February 10, when there will be an election.

Sheldon Silver was convicted on all federal corruption charges today.  Because he has been convicted of felonies, Silver automatically loses his Assembly seat, and Governor Cuomo will call a special election to fill the vacancy when he gets around to it.

Good riddance!
