In an interview in Nevada Tuesday night, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) waded into dicey diplomatic territory by referring to Chinese President Hu Jintao as a "dictator."

Asked about the tax-cut compromise at the end of last year, Reid said our system requires compromise. "I am going to go back to Washington tomorrow and meet with the President of China," Reid told reporter Jon Ralston. "[Hu] is a dictator. He can do a lot of things through the form of government they have."

Reid quickly realized he could have chosen his words more carefully, quickly adding, "Maybe I shouldn't have said dictator, but they have a different type of government than we have and that is an understatement."

Hu is in Washington for a summit and state dinner with President Obama. It will probably be his last visit as China's president. After coming into office with a gentle approach towards China, Obama has become more hard-nosed and pugnacious in clashes on economic policy, human rights and North Korea.

Hu has to put up with shenanigans every time he visits us?

Not but seriously... Sen. Reid really shouldn't have said that.

Haha, you have to love Bush for that move, even if he was a total disaster otherwise.

Calling Hu a dictator, while technically incorrect, is a lot more accurate than calling the PRC "capitalist".

The correct answer is "socialism with Chinese characteristics" and he isn't a dictator, he's the President of a Single Party-led Republic. Yould could say that Bush was that between 2003-2007 or Obama between 2009 and 2011.

China is a dictatorship. And Hue is the President of the dictatorship. Doesn't that make Hue a dictator, even thouh he isn't a dictator a la Idi Amin.

The U.S. isn't so uppity they've never supported dictators before, when it's in their interest to do so..........and it's Hu. Wink
