When meeting a new person, what traits do you immediately look for?

In terms of their personality, at least. And let's just say this person is strictly someone that you'd be friends with, but you can include romantically compatible traits if you'd like.

For me, the first thing I try to find out is what someone's music taste is. It's a lot easier for me to hold a conversation about music with someone that I share common tastes with, and I love talking about music anyway. Next would be sense of humour, and then probably taste in literature/poetry.

I look at how they speak. Much like Henry Higgins, I think the way a person speaks can almost completely identify them.

I prefer women with a relatively mature tone of voice -none of this high-pitched girlishness.  There's nothing more disappointing to find someone who is fairly attractive but still sounds like a teenager straight out of high school (though she may actually be in grad school).

     Respect is of utmost importance to me. The kind of person I like is the kind of person who is respectable and respectful. I don't have much to say to someone who cannot comport themself as an adult.

It usually varies between either common interest, depth of thought, or sense of humor. If any of these are compatible I know we're going to get along fine.
