We can blame a bad candidate and a bad campaign for a lot of Martha Cokeley's failure. But this is also Massachusetts. It's one of the, if not the most Democratic state in the country.

Infrastructurally, is the MA Democratic Party inept? Are they like COGOP or the FLDEMS? This is mostly a question for state Democrats.

Eh, I don't think so. They have all the congress seats. It's the fact that Massachusetts tends to elect Republican Governors, and Charlie Baker is a very strong candidate.

I wouldn't go that far. They've always been open to moderate Republicans, especially at the state level, and Baker having ties to the old guard helps him a lot too.

First off, note that Massachusetts Gubernatorial Elections have always been a LOT more purple than other sorts of elections within the state - as far as I can tell, it seems to be coming from a desire to place a check on the ~85% democratic legislature, though residents can certainly elaborate more on that.

MA-06 & MA-09 are the least democratic-friendly districts in terms of electoral history, so it's only natural that those house races are not 'Super Safe D'. In terms of other races (senate, other districts, downballot crap), things seem to be going fine - 2010 senate special aside, there have no recent 'unbelievable victories' that I know of. Doesn't really seem like the MADEMS are at real risk of becoming perennial losers like the FLDEMS/COGOP have often been in recent years.(although that could all change in a few days, we'll see) Again, others are certainly welcome to expand on anything I've written here.

How could a party that controls virtually everything in the state be inept? Wink

No, but the urban/suburban divide is obviously growing in Eastern Massachusetts. Hopefully this election leads to the MAGOP to run more candidates in this state.

I think it's just Martha Coakley who's inept.

Not at all. They control the state legislature, will still control the entire congressional delegation on Wednesday, and their preferred candidate for governor is currently leading in the polls by 4-6%.

When was the last time the Republicans won a House seat? Brown was basically a fluke too.

It's more that New England has a weird tendency to elect moderate Republicans, Baker's a rather good candidate and Coakley really isn't.

I got canvassed today by phone and offered a ride by the Coakley campaign and then, an hour later, canvassed at my door.
