I think it's very likely Obama runs an upbeat and positive ad in 2012, though that shouldn't be taken as a surprise. Bush was a rare incumbent who based his campaign around fear. Most of the time they run on optimism and success.
Fear and loathing were Dubya's style. Maybe such was more the creation of Karl Rogue and Dick Cheney, but... a fish stinks from the head. Fear steadily breaks people down, and when fear becomes disgust, then those using fear must watch out.
Optimism woks, especially when it has good events underpinning it.
But it was a dangerous meltdown. The seventeen months of the 2007-2009 meltdown may not have been an exact parallel to the 1929-1933 meltdown, but it came close at afew points
If economic optimism is restored, then President Obama is a shoo-in.
