It is kind of amazing. 18 months ago who would believe that Christie would not be a Romney-like (or stronger) establishment frontrunner with buckets of cash, and looking like a strong general election candidate? The irony is that he was undone by his own political operation pushing so hard to get Democratic mayor endorsements for his 2013 run to show how well he can do in blue-states in 2016. Hoisted by his own petard.
That was my thinking for a long time as well. Even after this whole thing first blew up, I thought he was still viable as long he wasn't directly implicated. Granted, Christie still hasn't been, but the fact that a can of worms has been opened into other things, this doesn't seem like it'll have a clean cut ending. Which is probably what he needed to still be viable.
