In this thread, we'll list any obsessions with states Atlas posters have, and post any amusing examples of these obsessions.

Atlas (2013-2015): Colorado (HILLARY CAN'T WIN IT!) and Virginia (NoVA Purple heart) )
TNVolunteer: New Hampshire (Safe D because muh angry women!)
IceSpear/Dingojoe: West Virginia (Too many racist, anti-Democrat hicks! HS!)
LLR: South Carolina (Safe D because muh angry Charleston moms!)
Xīngkěruì: Nevada (Safe D because muh Latinos!)
RR1997, Human, and JCL: Indiana
Kingpoleon: Minnesota (More Republican than Wisconsin and Michigan!)
TimTurner (during Gravity Falls): Oregon

If you look back to my ACM phase - albeit a brief one - there's plenty of good examples.

PMs with TNVol:

What's your point? We both already knew that NH was a feminist state Tongue

Oh, I just noticed that red means MORE tweets containing gendered insults. Haha, yeah that's funny. Doesn't surprise me at all, lol.

Why would you exclude "bitch" from gendered insults? Huh

I would assume because it's used at men nearly as much, And more importantly non-living objects.

The way it's used at men is still often implicitly sexist.

Though I guess if it's evolving into different uses (like in phrases like "[concept] is a bitch") you have a point.

To be fair, I don't think many Mississippi residents even know Twitter exists.

I can confirm my lack of sexism.

Interesting that it's more common for the most part in Democratic states.

xingkerui: Nevada (and to a lesser extent Wisconsin)

I don't think I bring up Wisconsin that much, except when it's the topic of discussion. I'll concede that I do talk about Nevada a lot, but only because so many people insist it's a toss-up. Tongue

Are you annoyed by the Atlasian/pundit meme that Minnesota is and will be for the next couple of presidential elections to the left of Wisconsin, too?

I'm not sure. I think it depends on the candidates in future elections. I'm not convinced either state is really trending one way or the other. In this particular election, Trump seems to be a pretty bad fit for both, so I could see Minnesota being on either side of Wisconsin.

Nice that you included your own obsession in there as well. Wink

Anyway, context:
Well, it's definitely more likely than Trump winning NH.

I had an obsession with Oregon running from when I began to get obsessed with Gravity Falls to around the time that show aired its last episode.
It got deeper as the months passed by.

What if Atlas are really the ones obsessed with NH and TN Volunteer is the one trying to get some sense into us?

Huh

Even if he's 110% right about NH, your "theory" wouldn't hold up, as no one talks about it very much except for him (i.e., he's not responding to an obsession, he's broadcasting his own, unasked).

You should add dingojoe/The Unbearable Invincibility of Hillary Clinton to the list. He has an eerie obsession with West Virginia, much more so than IceSpear.

And Kingpoleon has this obsession with Minnesota voting to the right of MI/WI, but that's not really an obsession, right? Wink

How dare I believe trends, right?

If fictional countries count, we should add Tender's strange obsession with "Austria".

I remember that, a long time ago, the website I used for reference on US elections before I found Dave's Atlas missed the State map for 1976 for some reason. I tried to infer State results from the county map, and as a result I was convinced that Ford had won New York.

Not an obsession obviously, but when I was 11 or 12, I saw the county map of the 2000 presidential election in Oregon on the internet. It struck me as very interesting because I saw so much red (for Bush) on the map and yet Gore won the state. I also remember seeing the VA map and wondering why Bush only won the state by 8 when he won pretty much every county in the state. And then Obama won it by so much in 2008 despite the fact that barely any counties changed from 2000/2004, lol. I found that quite fascinating back then.
Indeed.
