I think he does. Whatever he says now, McCain clearly wanted to choose Lieberman, but didn't have the guts to go against the party establishment and his campaign staff. The irony is that if he had selected Lieberman, the religious right would have accepted it pretty quickly. Indeed, shortly before the Palin selection Huckabee clearly said that he would support anyone who respected the GOP's stance on abortion (implying that all Lieberman had to do was to make appropriate assurances about judges).
The whole Palin selection was nothing to do with abortion or women's rights, but was to do with fiscal conservatives wanting to geld, as well as brand, "Maverick" McCain.
