Why exactly was Derek banned?

FWIW, I inquired about that on my own recognizance, and was satisfied by the answer that it was appropriate. Not that my opinion should particularly matter, because it should not.

Derek was banned due to excessive spamming and trolling. Sargent probably got banned because he was Hamilton and also because he was an excessive troll and spammer. TBH, I kinda liked Sargent.

He actually wasn't doing too badly in terms of the number of reported/infracted posts.  But then last weekend happened, and his (presumably intoxicated) rampage of trolling and spamming (most of which has since been deleted, of course) got him removed extremely rapidly.  For a change.

You don't get to see the posts because they get deleted. Jmfcst is with BRTD and Opebo in the category of old-timers who get away with stuff.

But, even that aside, Jmf is a lot more deserving to be here than Sargent. He was a nasty troll.

Sometimes I think a reporting system is a one great bulls**t. You can get reported for a laughable thing. You can not get reported by something way more serious and mods are telling you not to report, because they're getting PMs (who why the hell did they take this job).

Why not to get rid off reports system and have moderators watching boards on their own more carefully?

The three have been moderated by 3 different moderators, and in a way I wouldn't complain about, but only 1 shows moderated in stats.

If I'm seriously going to get another point for having a sense of humor I think it's worth it.  My whole post was a legitimate post asking a question and sprinkled with comedic relief.

We only want people not to report things that shouldn't be reported. It really isn't that hard.

A good starting point is to not report stuff if you're reporting it only to make the point that other things should not have been moderated. That's just annoying.

That would result in a fat less consistent moderating system and a LOT of work for us, and result in us parachuting in way too late after

The problem is that there's been a bureaucratic system set up that's extensive and all-encompassing to try and guide and "correct" disruptive posters, but if we could just toss out a few bad apples, we wouldn't need the extensive bureaucratic system of points.  

And Gramps, chillax, it's Dave's explicit preference that the forums here remain PG rated for youngins on public school computers.  I think it's silly, probably not worth a "point" but I could understand thinking that some Playgirl spreads or whatevsky should be linked out instead of contained in img tags.  I stand with the asscheeks though!

I wonder how many posts have been generated on the infraction points issue? Have we hit a thousand yet? I suspect due to my lack of self control, I have added at least ten to the cesspool.

I might add, that almost none of us have anything to worry about on this infraction point business, even if we catch a few, perhaps unfairly. So why sweat it? I don't worry about it at all. I just bowdlerize my language (annoying isn't it?), because Dave has a good reason for not wanting it, and try to be a basically decent person (I don't always succeed, but I try). It is not hard.

PS: I put a linkie to the definition of "bowdlerize," because I consider it one of the gleaming toy words of the English language, and you all should add it to your vocabulary, if you don't know the word already.
