Outgoing Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) on Wednesday cemented his legacy on a defining issue of his tenure, announcing that he would commute the sentences of Maryland’s four remaining death-row inmates to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

With the stroke of a pen, O’Malley will soon wipe out the remnants of capital punishment in Maryland, an issue on which he lobbied lawmakers from the outset of his first term in 2007. A practicing Catholic, O’Malley argued that executions are not cost-effective, do not deter murders and are at odds with “our values as a people.”

O’Malley’s decision to commute the death sentences comes nearly two years after he persuaded the legislature to repeal capital punishment and three weeks before he will complete his second, and final, term.

I was wondering whether he'll actually do this, given his national ambitions, as well as the fact he was reluctant to use his clemency powers throught his tenure. Good to be proved wrong.

Good. I support capitol punishment in theory, but I don't trust the convictions, given how many innocents have been sentenced to death, and how many are rumored to still be on death row.

This. Also Maryland's opinion of O'Malley...well, you can see the election results two months ago. More grandstanding for the 2016 Presidential nomination and trying to court the social liberals/minority voters to gain a respectable showing against Hillary Clinton.

Justice is carrying out the letter of the law in the most dispassionate and equitable way possible. It isn't about making the victims' families "feel better." If you want that, go to any developing country where judges arbitrarily order the arrest of people without clear charges simply because the public is angry at them for one reason or another.
