A mixture of East Coast Republicans and very-conservative Republicans deserted Boehner and gutted the bill. Just out of sheer boredom, I made a map of the vote, which is why I'm now starting the thread.

Obviously, blue is Aye and red is Nay; gray is a tie and green is no votes cast. I subtracted members who abstained from the totals for their states. Pretty intuitive.

Excellent news.  Hopefully they can work out a decent bill that will pass.

He must be the most ineffective speaker of all times.

If we had the Westminster system, his party would dump him.

If John Boehner was a woman, people would be saying (or at least debating) that Jane Boehner is the weakest Speaker in U.S. history.

Of course, no Republican can be a better Speaker than Boehner with this GOP caucus.

If we had the Westminister system, Boehnor would be nowhere near the leadership. He would be lucky to be on the frontbench. The best he would get is the title "Shadow Minister of Agriculture."

Hopefully the foreign food aid reforms in the Senate bill but that the House voted down (not on party lines) end up in whatever lands on the president's desk.

http://www.oxfamamerica.org/press/pressreleases/oxfam-reaction-to-senate-farm-bill-passage

The main thing is reducing the amount spent through "monetarization" where food bought from U.S. farms is shipped overseas and sold to fund NGOs development projects - which wastes a lot of money and tends to undercut local markets.  Also there's the Grassley amendment (limiting agribusiness marketing loans) that moves in the direction of more free/fair trade conditions.

According to Eric Cantor, the bill's failure is all the Democrats' fault.  That's right; the minority party in the House of Representatives is to blame for defeating a bill in a majority vote.

Aside from the previous Congress, it's been 65 years since there were this few Democrats in Congress. Pretty sad that they are blaming the Democrats. Who ironically won the popular vote.

The bill was rightly defeated. If it weren't for the Republican poison pills that went after food stamps, it would've had plenty of Democratic votes.

Pelosi's comments on the aftermath were really excellent. Even if every Democrat voted in favour, it still would've failed. Amateur hour, indeed. John Boehner really is pathetic and an incredibly weak Speaker.

Yep, this could have passed with its cuts to food stamps except the Republicans had to pass one last "screw you" amendment to cut things further... And then their own purity caucus still wouldn't support it. Boehner is a colossal failure.

Sorry. I meant to say that if Democrats had delivered the 40 votes that Republicans believed they were promised, it still would've failed. Blaming the minority party for failing to pass a bill is absurd. Of course, the bill would have easily passed with Democratic votes were it not for the attack on food stamp recipients.

I do find it somewhat puzzling as to why it was even brought up for a vote. House leadership tends not to bring bills to the floor unless passage is virtually guaranteed. That's what's making Boehner look like a joke. He has no control over his own caucus, let alone the House. The same cannot be said about the Gingrich or Pelosi Speakerships.

Having been amended to a degree, Boehner put the bill to the House again, which this time confirmed it. Most (but not all) Republicans came home and voted for it; zero Democrats voted for the bill, though five did not cast a vote, most significantly (for map-making purposes) Steven Horsford of Nevada; because I don't count abstentions, Nevada was mapped as having voted 2-1 Aye.

Same key as in the map above.

Reid blamed the Republicans for the failure of the 2007 immigration bill even though many Democrats (caucusing Democrats) ranging from Bernie Sanders to Ben Nelson had voted no, so much so that it actually got a majority voting against it. He had 51 seats in his party and about 15 or 16 Republicans were voting Aye, just to give you a feeling for the number of Democratic defections.

Does anyone have any residual faith in the GOP to serve any but the super-rich?

The Democrats are a little better. They serve both the rich and super-rich.
