Except that they aren't really free of the national curriculum because of a) the way educational publishing and exam boards work and b) the existence of pressure from further/higher education and employers wrt qualifications.

Every school in England will be forced to become an academy by 2020, apparently.

The consequences of the Labour Party's ability to miss open goals continue.

THIGMOO is basically the political version of My Sh!t Team sometimes...

Asa Briggs has died, which is sad. One of the earlier pioneers of urban history, amongst other things (an important educationalist etc). 94 though, so a good innings.

IDS was not (is not) a monster. But he is an idiot (perhaps one of the stupidest people to hold a cabinet post in recent decades: not an easy feat) and he was also grossly incompetent. In a post such as his the difference between that and 'monster' is quite small. It has been clear for a long time that Universal Credit (a foolish attempt to find an administrative 'solution' to policy problems: oh dear) has been an expensive failure and as such he should have resigned ages ago. Of course its worth noting that he was obviously going to be fired the morning after the EU vote anyway...

It was a pretty poor result that doesn't look it in terms of seats because of enough incumbents with enough personal votes (though equally a seat was lost because of such factors), but the reasons for that aren't really related to the GB-wide troubles.

Comparisons to past parliamentary elections are silly though; the voters treat Assembly elections as a giant local poll and council issues often end up having a impact on results

The law was deliberately written in such a way as to prevent it from being easily politicised.

Hanging was always a terrible issue for the Right; a lot of people who supported it in theory were leery about its use in practice and everyone opposed to it was vehemently against. There was never any chance of it coming back when survey showed theoretical support in the 70s and there's less than no chance now.

It's already at a point where it couldn't win a referendum, let alone attract the support of more than a handful of MPs. Dead issue and gets deader with every passing year.

Would it be fair to say that the last Prime Minister to leave on his or her own terms was Harold Wilson?

And also arguably the first.

I feel Watson orchestrated this somehow (and good for him), tomorrow will be Corbyn's judgement day.

Definitely organised by someone, but from the way it's happened through the day doubt it was planned for right now. And definitely wasn't if Watson was involved given that he was out of town at the time. Corbyn firing Benn at like 1am seems to have kicked everything off.

The key thing to note is the list of people who have not resigned. Not just Burnham; there are some obviously ambitious people who have stayed put today.

I cannot claim to see into people's souls. But everyone knows that Owen Smith and Lisa Nandy do not want for ambition. Neither do the Eagle sisters. Or presumably Ashworth. Burnham and Berger are both running for those silly new Metro Mayor posts. O/c this assumes no further quittings.

It pretty clearly has caused chaos within the Tories. Just that right now its off stage chaos. Labour were in chaos before; things have just been brought to a head.

By the way, if Corbyn survives today then we might end up seeing a long-held wish of mine - the MP for Bolsover on the front bench. Tbh there won't be many other choices......

*Nia Griffith* has gone ffs I mean... Jesus. She's old school Welsh Labour Left.
