I've heard that Birch Bayh was a liberal icon.  How did he get elected in Indiana so many times?  This is a very conservative state.  Or was Indiana a much more liberal state back in the day?

Not sure but when talking about 1964, Clinton in My Life talks of Indiana as a conservative state represented by two liberal Democratic senators

I don't think Birch ever won as his Senate races (1962; 1968; 1974) by Evan-style margins, though I could be mistaken
