I got married when I was 22, about a month and a half before my 23rd birthday. My wife was 24.

We got married so that we could stay together. If we hadn't lived on opposite sides of the globe and had to worry about migrating and all of that crap we'd probably wouldn't have bothered and just lived together and shared everything. So if anything terrible happened in the future it'd be less of a problem to part ways. I'd say that's a lot less stressful of an arrangement for anyone who can do it, but of course you have to find the right person. Some partners want to be officially this or that or it's somehow less 'real' to them. Load of crap.
