Parker's two landslide victories set off a remarkable contest to replace him. At age 88, Vice-President Davis was in no position to run as a successor, and Parker's political godfather David Hill, who was made Secretary of State to solidify his heir apparent status, disqualified himself with his untimely death. Of the remaining candidates, Parker is believed to silently favor Speaker Champ Clark for the nomination. Meanwhile, party leader-in-exile William Jennings Bryan supports whomever has the best chance to defeat Clark, out of spite for Parker.
For the Republicans, after two landslide defeats, virtually every elected official with a pulse is vying for the nomination. Although the frontrunner is former President Theodore Roosevelt, the conservative faction of the party is seeking a palatable alternative to Roosevelt's unsavory platform.
