Anyone knows his positions on theological and reform issues, and whether or not he's tied to the Vatican mafia?

This is the first pope to take a single name that nobody’s ever used before since Pope Lando.

Not a bad idea for a pope whose goal is cleaning house, though.

Although he's a Jesuit, he's not at all a liberal. Will be interesting to see what his papacy is like, though definitely a compromise placeholder.

The name is a huge shock. Shows the message of huge humilty. He's also known as a fighter for social justice. IMO, a very intriguing and exciting pick.

All I know about him is that he's a Jesuit.

More or less run-of-the-mill, although his heart doesn't seem to be in the socially conservative stuff (or politics in general) as much as some of the others. He is concerned about economic justice but prefers to emphasize holiness.

He did, however, say some fairly awful stuff when his country legalized gay marriage.

I don't believe he's considered a Vatican insider.

He seems like a genuinely unworldly person.

It will be fun to hear French comments on the new name, because the name of 'François premier' is forever associated with the famous French monarch...

That sounds like a Pope Francis I alright.

Now quick... since none of his name's Peter... someone link him to Rome in any way. Maybe his ancestors emigrated to Argentine from Lazio?

Not too bad a choice, then. And the name he chose seems encouraging about his intentions.

Although it's somewhat surprising that no one used that name in the century's since Assisi.

Given that nobody had used a new name in centuries, presumably no pope wanted to be the first to change things.

I just realized he is the guy the anti-Ratzinger people reportedly coalesced around in the 2nd to 4th round of voting in 2005.

Apparently at the time he told them to stop voting for him and voted for Ratzinger himself.

You are, of course, not actually allowed to vote for yourself, though there's nothing to stop you.

(For a time, however, election required two thirds plus one vote to guard against that.)

Wierd choice. Still, given his focus on social justice and his mainstream social conservatism (no comments over the top), it's pretty good.

I had been hoping for a Black pope on purely aesthetic grounds, actually. An old, lean Black man ought to rock papal whites.

Well, of course, but presumably you don't vote for your most significant rival if you want to be pope.

Both John and Paul had been used before (and that was also centuries after St. Francis!). It was pretty shocking at the time, though.

His choice reminds me A LOT of John XXIII. Likely a short but hugely important papacy is coming up. I will not be surprised if he calls a Council Vatican III within the next 2 years.
