Wow, Feinstein must have realized she has a primary coming up. That's a shocker.

Looks like I was a little high on my prediction.

You're not the only one. I predicted 85-15. Look's like I'm going to be wrong. Never mind, I guess, I'll get over it Wink

Since apparently the Dems are going to be partisan jokes no matter what, Bush should just appoint someone like Luttig.

I find it hard to believe that Harry Reid is opposing the nomination of a perfectly fine choice like John Roberts.  Aren't we supposed to stop looking like partisan hacks?

That would be a good plan, except for Specter.

How do you know he's a "fine choice"?

Okay, McConnell then.

Why would any Democrat vote for a right wing judge?  Good for Reid, Leahy is a big dissappointment.

What will Hillary do?

I'm guessing no, for the same reasons as Biden.

Hillary just released a statement saying she'll vote no.

I have to admit Reid the big 'Nay' surprise, while Feingold's the big 'Aye' surprise

That really shouldn't be surprising given Feingold's past record and Reid's new position as Minority Leader.

Yes, but I would have still expected it to have been the other way round. It would seem the support/opposition to Roberts is not strictly falling along liberal/moderate lines

Of course, the main line of demarcation among Democrats, thus far, seems to be the blue state/red state dichotomy (but even then this is not mutually exclusive since Feingold, Kohl and Reid are exceptions)

Were I a Democratic Senator, I'd vote for Roberts, when he said he wasn't an ideologue that would have been good enough for me. I kind of agree with Leahy on this

Politics really doesn't play a role in Feingold's votes.

He is the most principled man in the Senate. Whether it helps him or hurts him, he votes his conscience and his principles.

I thought he liked Roberts because he was from Indiana?

Meanwhile, Specter is pushing for O'Conner to delay retirement until next summer:

In other words, if Roberts turns out to be a conservative, Bush will be forced to appoint a liberal-moderate next summer or face a filibuster as the Democrats hope to win the Senate back in 2006.  Specter's plan would be a huge win for the Democrats.

Maybe John Roberts would hide his positions for another year. He'd still get 30+ years to screw over America.

I like that criteria! If he's from your home state, he gets a pass!

I seriously thought that was the deal. I thought Bayh gave a speech supporting Roberts and included all kinds of sh**t about Indiana at the hearings or whatever.

That's scary. Basing a vote on what state someone is from is something a 5th grader would do.

Home state Senators always introduce the Supreme Court nominees. It's tradition. Doesn't really mean much at all.

I wasn't actually saying it was a smart decision to simply vote on someone based on their state, I actually was originally making that comment in jest but I didn't know the tradition of homestate senators introducing the nominee so I guess that would explain it.

Bayh did more than introduce Roberts. I watched it on C-Span... he practically came out in support of him right then and there.

If Bayh thinks he can somehow get the left to love him with a few stupid votes... he's not only a robot, but one with a defective microchip.
