The republican party is approaching Isis levels. I hope they lose big time.

Platform meeting just concluded, but not before defeating an amendment labeling marijuana legalization a state issue protected under the Constitution

Fun and revealing watch overall. The Cruz delegates seemed to win today

How'd the argument on this go?

Honestly, pretty weak. It was a Maine delegate that brought it up on largely libertarian grounds (States rights, goes against 10th amendment). It was followed up with a delegate stating that it was a divisive amendment meant to get delegates to support marijuana legalization which "doesn't need to be addressed in the platform". Failed unanimously with the Maine delegate being the only aye vote.

I believe a marijuana amendment was addressed and voted on anyway in the first 2 hours of the meeting, so it would have been redundant to bring the last one up

Who's right is it to stop someone from doing what they damn well please in the comfort of their room?(that doesn't harm anyone else)

Calling it a "public menace" and a "public health crisis" does not indicate that they want to ban pornography in the privacy of one's home (an area that does not fall within the scope of "public").

Likely, given the word "public," the Republicans are simply trying to limit access to pornography in public areas, such as libraries, cafes, and movie theaters.

If it were even possible to ban pornography in private areas, then our government would have done so in the past (they banned alcohol at one time). That they never banned pornography suggests that it cannot be done; the First Amendment protects it.

Or it suggests the people opposed to porn are actually watching it.

To add to what KingSweden said earlier in this thread re: normalizing sexuality (read: not feeling guilty about or disgusted by sex between consenting adults) in American society, I would also say that I have a fairly similar stance on pornography as I have on prostitution: regulate it (or in the latter case, legalize and regulate it) and protect people who work in both fields from exploitation and abuse (which unfortunately does happen at a disturbingly high rate). Furthermore, if more young women - particularly from disadvantaged/low socioeconomic backgrounds - had more opportunities for becoming economically independent and achieving social mobility and security, then perhaps there would be less women who turn to these lines of work out of desperation (as opposed to it being a voluntary career path, which certainly happens and to which I am by no means opposed).

No need to ban sex-related work, just protect the safety and dignity of the people who work in it (and FFS, stop shaming people -  or rather, stop shaming women, because let's be real...they receive the brunt of the shaming and condemnation from others - who do sex-related work).

Im sure the old men and women who came up with this platform surely must enjoy fantasizing about youngins getting off to porn. Or thinking about every move the LGBT youth does. They could invest that time and energy into doing something productive instead of thinking what people do in the privacy of their own home.

People who watch porn are sick and should be shunned from society. I'm sorry, but I agree with the GOP on this. They should be barred from employment and being near children. It's filthy to watch that.

Porn itself is sick, but enough people watch it, many to the point of addiction or nearly-so, that this is both impracticable and cruel.

I'm obviously not surprised that this is controversial, but I am a little appalled that it's being treated as if it's self-evidently ridiculous.

It is scientifically proven that porn addiction does exist. Look up NoFap on reddit.

This platform is another dagger in my chances to become Republican again. Does anyone know how to change your actual username since I'm not a Republican anymore?
Nobody even reads the platform on election day. From what I have heard the Dem platform have shifted left and the GOP platform has shifted more right though I think. There is basically "no middle" anymore. I think the GOP Platform kind of pedaled away from LBGT issues or wasn't contraversal in that area.

As for the "porn" issue is anybody gonna vote on that issue on election day? I don't think so.

I think we should ban non-steamed broccoli. Let's get H. W. to sign on to lend it credibility.

And just this minute, they adopted the following amendment change:

"Children raised in a traditional two-parent household tend to be physically and emotionally healthier, less likely to use drugs and alcohol, engage in crime or become pregnant outside of marriage"

So much for trying not to further alienate minorities
Well children do better in a two-parent household than a single-parent household.

That is true, and social policy should encourage as many complete and cohesive families as possible, but it's not a particularly useful political message. It reminds me of my favorite Zell Miller quote:

"So you see, I know what Dan Quayle means when he says it's best for children to have two parents. You bet it is. And it would be good if they could all have trust funds, too. We can't all be born rich, and handsome, and lucky, and that's why we have a Democratic Party."

A party led by Donald Trump with intellectual leaders like Newt Gingrich doesn't really have the moral high ground to talk about this kind of stuff, either. The rest of the platform, I basically agree with. I especially like the Bible in schools part.
