I government is asking not "telling" but you just want to abolish the pledge and not really listen to what I'm saying.
Not abolish. I wish to remove the official sanctioning; if people wish to say the pledge, they shall still be free to do so.

Can I motion for a straw poll deciding whether to keep the pledge the way it is, add under Dave, abolish the pledge, or remove under god?

Straw polls are informal, so you can feel free to ask the Senate, if you like.

An interesting sidenote:
I would like to ask which clause of the Atlasian Constitution authorizes the Senate to legislate patriotism in the first place.

We kept the pledge after writing the original constitution and then after this one. It was before our constitution and we kept it. If it was abolished then we couldn't bring it back but until then.......

I sense another court case coming regardless of what happens with the legislation here.

So basically, it's unconstitutional, but you want us to keep it anyway?

I motion that the bill be pigeonholed (if that's possible). Surely things like Taxation, Foreign Policy, and the Spotted Owl are more pressing issues.

Well, it'd be nice to stall this thing as long as possible so District 4 has representation when this comes to a vote.

Sam Spade's "under Dave" amendment will have to come to a vote at some time tomorrow, when the 72-hour period for debate expires.

Thereafter, vote on the next amendment can begin.

Didn't I already do one of those?

Indeed, the results are interesting:

Keep the pledge as it currently is: 13
Change to "under Dave": 5
Remove "under God": 5
Abolish the pledge: 13

So that's

23 who want to keep the pledge (with or without changes)
13 who want to abolish it

And I will keep that in mind because I'd rather change it to "under Dave" then get rid of it entirely.

23 who want to keep the pledge (with or without changes)
13 who want to abolish it
I could say:
13 want to abolish the pledge
23 don't

But, I could also say:
13 want to keep the pledge as it is
23 don't

And, I could also say:
5 want to use "under Dave"
31 don't

Or:
5 want to remove "under God"
31 don't

So it's not at all that clear-cut.

Ah crap I'm gone for one night and all hell breaks loose. So what's going on here? All I keep seeing is straw polls and abolishing it and all this crap. Has anything actually been done with this?

No, because we've never had 24 hours without debate. But, as I noted above, a vote on the "under Dave" amendment is required tomorrow.

Senator Gabu, since there seems to be a misunderstanding about the intent of the "abolition" of the pledge, I request that you disregard the previous amendment and replace it with the following instead:

There shall be no officially sanctioned pledge of allegiance to Atlasia, its flag, or its government.

Sorry, I've been away for the balance of the weekend... okay, I'll introduce this version instead.

I would like to propose an amendment to the legislation:

Pledge of Allegiance Bill of 2005

The words "under God" shall cease to form a part of the pledge of allegiance of Atlasia and shall be replaced by the words "under Dave".  The new pledge of allegiance shall read as follows:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of Atlasia, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under Dave, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."
The question is on the Spade Amendment. All those in favor, say Aye; those opposed, say No.
