Mr. Moderate's first law of politics: When the Democratic candidate starts campaigning on the issue of abortion, they're running a doomed campaign.

I repeat: Democrats should never ever ever ever ever discuss the issue of abortion in the general election setting to point out the difference between their pro-choice candidate and a pro-life Republican. Especially in paid media.

Pro-choice swing voters never vote for Democrats on the abortion issue. They'll register in polls saying they're less likely to vote for a Republican because of it, but when push comes to shove, it's so down on the list of their priorities that it doesn't matter.

Running ads that feature abortion do more to hurt than help, because they energize pro-life Republican core voters. Ask Shannon O'Brien if she regrets framing Romney as extreme because of his views on abortion. Or Jon Corzine re: Chris Christie. Or every female Democrat who's run in New Jersey against a pro-life Republican—they always bring it up.

The mammogram issue is a solid one for Quinn (or any Democrat). Mentioning Brady's pro-life stand in the same ad blunts the effectiveness of the message.
