People oftentimes do that when they are insecure about their masculinity. Then again, I don't perceive a guy who's obsessed with underage-looking Japanese chicks to be that secure about his masculinity, nor a guy who's obsessed with hot-looking (albeit nonexistent) Communist women and strip clubs.
