....Transgender individuals to  serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming.....
--

At least it's not a tactical redeployment of the 7th fleet or something like that.

This type of decision should be put out in a speech or presser, not a Twitter game.

This. Apparently, their willingness to sacrifice their lives for their country is not valued.

lol... and what is he supposed to be? Strategically competent? Good thing he is LGBTQI+ friendly, as he said when he was campaigning. It's infuriating.

So I guess we're doing this now, huh? The US just became much worse on human rights than a few minutes ago.

As someone with a family member who is transgender, I want to issue a giant middle finger to this incompetent moron.  Also, to all of his supporters...who are equally incompetent morons.

I know one or two of them will report me for calling them incompetent morons (does that make them snowflakes?).  But I don't care because that's exactly what they are.

IIRC, General Mattis was the driving force behind this, no?

Institutional discrimination against people for their inherent qualities is still federal policy in the "land of the free" in 2017. I'm sure similar arguments were or could've been used to ban women, gay persons from military service, and equal treatment of African Americans before them. It's just an excuse to justify ongoing discrimination and bigotry against a highly disadvantaged group in America.

I'd say Trump and Republicans should be ashamed of themselves, but they have no shame. Just wait until the Trump lovers come in here to praise or rationalize this transphobia.

As a vet, obviously mixed on this. It would cost an additional 26 million or so from a report that was put out earlier but had no problem serving with LBG, the T part would follow eventually. I'm no longer active duty so not affected by this as much as current active duty SMs.

As to the decision and a court challenge, it may happen but it is a decision coming from the CINC re military decisions. Any decision coming from that level would have extreme merit in a case, regardless of the good or bad merits of it. It is essentially an order.

Sounds like the grifter is opening himself up to a yuge lawsuit, can't discriminate against people, he's going to lose on this and go nuclear. Hope this is a slap in the face and a wakeup call to the few people who thought he would be good for LGBT people.

He pushed back against an outright ban but helped to delay a decision on it. I'm assuming Trump in his tweet "with the generals" was the JCS and SecDef. Curious to see how that one was decided, split or unanimous.

If anyone actually trusted a Republican to have a decent agenda on LGBT issues, I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell them.

Seriously, what is the justification for this?

Medical expenses?? Please.

Everyone knows exactly what this is.  America is dwindling, and by the time he's through, we'll be a tiny fraction of what we once were.

$26m? That's 'lose behind the couch' money for the military. So it's in no way a financial decision.

It's the push back against funding reassignment surgeries within the DoD system. Which yea or nay on, has a TON of pushback from AD. It would only be 26M tho which is a drop in the bucket of DoD spending.

Looks like we posted at the same time (see my last) but yeah agree. 26M is nothing really in the grand scheme

By this logic, no one in the military should be allowed any medical expense.  That's only fair.

Yeah I mean I'm not really behind this decision but I doubt Trump just decided on his own without both the JCS and Mattis supporting it.

I can see the court case (if one happens) to base it on discrimination of procedures, singling out one vs. allowance of all care, esp if done via TriCare/VA/base hospitals. Does the DoD have the right to prefer certain care in the overall structure as opposed to all? Would be an interesting SCOTUS case.
