IA-3 GOP primary is kinda interesting in that Zaun won by getting 52% in Polk County (Des Moines), and naturally where his state Senate seat is and either losing or performing weakly everywhere else.

Who is supposed to be the strongest candidate in the General?

You don't like the jungle primary Pit?

It essentially eliminates protest voting in general elections. I would be more favorable to it if it also incorporated a Nevada-style NOTA line.

In theory, Gibbons because he raised the most money by a good bit.  I think the political class in Iowa may have wanted Zaun.

We'll see - Boswell has been a weak incumbent for almost forever imo.

Yeah, there's that.  Behold, the stupidity of the initiative system.

The theory is that it might elect more moderates (the jungle primary), particularly if in safe districts, the minority party votes for the more congenial member of the other party, knowing one of their own is DOA. We shall see. I can see this system having taken out my local state rep, who ran unopposed, but is not popular, for good reason.

So basically you're saying he won where the people are and trailed where the people aren't.  That usually wins elections - and is a pretty good strategy.

Zaun seems to have done worst on the fringes of the district, some (but not all) of which are counties outside the Des Moines TV market.

It shows that he's probably a pretty good rep at the "constituency" thingy - and was, of course, helped by the numbers as you pointed out (not all of his district is in Polk, btw).  That may or may not mean something come election time.

Well, I'm back. Disappointed in Arkansas, but all Lincoln really won was the chance to be humiliated in November with a Santorum-esque defeat.

Luckily it looks like the GOP voted correctly in NV-Sen and CA.

Was there that much difference between the NV Republicans? Obviously Fiornia's resume isn't going to go over well

1. Offshored American jobs
2. Was fired from HP
3. Was fired by McCain campaign

Yeah, that's a winner.

You don't like the jungle primary Pit?

Theoretically, it could help third party candidates by lowering the threshold required for plurality.  A charismatic, viable third party candidate could make it to the runoff.  However, major party candidates don't always split the vote near-evenly.

You will never see a third party on a general election ballot again in any race of significance. California has killed third parties tonight.

Extremely disappointed by what happened in Arkansas but very glad Republicans decided to give us the California and Nevada Senate seats.

Lowden says stupid things but has pretty standard Republican positions. Angle says stupid things and backs those up with ridiculous, far-right positions (such as supporting prohibition of alcohol).

Lowden and Tarkanian tried to tie themselves to the teabaggers, but everybody could see straight though that.  Angle actually is a teabagger, and probably a Scientologist as well.  And yeah, a Prohibitionist.

Good job, GOP.  You just convinced me to vote for the useless old fart of an incumbent.

To illustrate my TV market point, here's a map of the district, with the TV markets overlaid.  The blue area is in the Des Moines TV market.  The brown area is in the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Dubuque TV market.   Zaun's county % is in red; the IA-03 CD border is in Yellow/Red.

How does his Senate boundary fit in the map?

Well, not quite. She said she is against legalizing pot, and that it is sad that booze was legalized, since it has led to so many problems, so why legalize another way to go down the tubes or something (unless of course you are a 59 year old lawyer, in which event, keep hope alive that pot will send the jerk into a homeless shelter). I don't think she will actually say, that she wants booze  banned. Smiley

With 95% in, it's clear Lowden even got crushed in Clark County:
Angle, Sharron          34,003    38.19%
Lowden, Sue             27,035    30.36%
Tarkanian, Danny     19,551    21.96%

(Clark County Results)

Statewide total, including these results:
Angle        67,504 40%
Lowden    44,382 26%
Tarkanian 39,339 23%

Props. 16 and 17 are looking like they won't be able to be called for several hours.

The really retarded thing about Prop. 16 is that it only needs a 1/2 vote to amend the Constitution so that a 2/3rds vote is needed to tell PG&E to take a hike.

16 would require a 2/3 vote to allow any public entity to get involved in business involving electricity utilities, so basically an anti-"OMG SOCIALISM" type thing.

17 is an auto insurance backed thing that would allow companies to offer lower rates just to lure in new customers but would probably result in higher rates overall in the long run.
