Hundreds of thousands are currently protesting in Romania over a bill to amend the penal code in the country, a move which many consider to weaken anti-corruption legislation and encourage abuses of power. Yesterday, the PSD-led government withdrew the bill, so it will be interesting to see how the protests go forward, especially since the election only just finished and the new government isn't even a month into its term.
Things are further complicated by the fact that President Klaus Ioahnnis of the National Liberal Party opposed the bill, and was calling for a referendum. In theory, this looks like a win for him, but we shall see, especially if the sentiment in the big cities is different from in the rural areas which played a big part in delivering the PSD victory in the last election.
