I do support draft registration. In the event that a war calls for it, the draft will be necessary. I don't believe that the draft is politically feasibly unless the circumstances are sufficiently dire.

I also support some sort of national service that includes military service, community work, and things of the like.

NEVER. (L)

In fact, I would 100% support a constitutional amendment banning conscription. It's a terrible, terrible practice. Far too many people have died due to government overreach in the Orwellian guise of "defense."

Absolutely, 100% yes, and also favor a re-instatement of the draft with a year of mandatory national service, like you described.

The military has less need for meatbags nowadays.

I'm not sure why it's necessary today. The Social Security number is ubiquitous for other federal uses and it has the vital information that would be needed in times of war.

If we're in a war where we need more dudes to survive and we don't have enough volunteers, we deserve to die as a nation.  No (I).

I wouldn't be against some kind of "national service" for a period of time (6 months, 2 years, doesn't matter that much).  But it would probably work better if it was more about fixing, creating, teaching and building better humans instead of how to do a bunch of pushups, make a bed and shoot an M16.  And like Crabby said, the military doesn't want a bunch of dumb fatties that don't want to be there.

NSA should just hack online video gaming and have them fly the drones, whether they know it or not.

There is at least three things really wrong with that idea, and I'm probably missing a couple.

Yes, but for everyone. While there are a lot of benefits to a professional military, our leaders will think a lot more carefully about going to war when everyone's kids could be sent into the battlefield.

Well then, my work here is done.

Though is all seriousness, remote warfare seems to be the disturbing future.

I voted yes but only in the most extreme scenarios.  We'd literally have to be overrun by socialists in D.C. before I supported it.

The purpose of a state are foremost to uphold its monopoly of force versus internal and external actors.

So yes I support that states conscript their citizens if it's necessary.

No, and unfortunately I have to side with the small government folks on the "national service" question. I can't imagine the federal government doing it in a way that wouldn't be a nightmare for everyone involved.

It's one thing to run programs like the Peace Corps and National Guard that draw on self-selected volunteers (and that reject those who aren't suited for service). It's quite another to have a truly universal program that draws from the full spectrum of American citizens and that has no specific mission. The result would probably resemble spending time in an especially poorly-run federal prison more than anything.

and that's exactly what happened with Job Corps.  But of course that's what's going to happen when you force a bunch of drop outs and criminals to live with the actual down and outs trying to make their way.
