Cleveland has officially dropped its bid to host the DNC, as it's been chosen to host the RNC, and can't handle doing double duty.

Here's a handicapping of the remaining five finalists:

http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/handicapping-the-democratic-convention-sites-for-2016-20140725

NYC and Philly are seen as the frontrunners.  The last of the site visits will take place in Phoenix on Sept. 10-11, and hopefully we'll have a decision shortly thereafter.

What do they hope to accomplish by having it in NYC, strategically?

Birmingham makes no sense for a whole host of reasons.

NYC is the Democratic version of holding it in Dallas and the optics will be even worse if Hillary somehow blows the nomination again or doesn't run (unlikely, but hope springs eternal Tongue ).

Columbus would make my taxes go up to pay for something that doesn't benefit the local community, help struggling Americans, or contribute to fixing a major problem of some sort.  Thus, I am basically ABC on this.

Phoenix will give Arpaio a chance to make life difficult for delegates.

Philadelphia seems like the best choice by default.

Brooklyn seems like a perfect spot for Dems.  The gentrification - errrr, "revitalization" - there puts other's cities' "revitalization" to shame.  And it's still close enough to Wall Street...

it would be way more fun for everyone involved than, say, Phoenix in August.  and the insiders know that the idea that a convention locale can sway votes come November is bunk.

It's pretty amazing that Philadelphia hasn't hosted a Democratic convention since 1948!

I'm pulling for Philly because they'd catch on fire in Phoenix.

Either Columbus or Philadelphia should get it.

...Because it's not like there are people who live in Phoenix during the summertime?

Phoenix would just mean that one would have to spend their time inside air conditioning and the main thing to do would be to get drunk. So basically, it would be like Las Vegas is at any time of year.

Philly would be great. Would they boo the Democratic nominee?

Or, would they throw batteries at them?

Either way, they'd likely have to budget to have a jail nearby: http://nypress.com/stadium-justice/
