Would Republicans have started to support National Popular Vote bills? Would Democrats turn against them?

Spoilers: If it could be used to somehow malign Obama in any possible way, Republicans jump all over it even if it's a porcupine with poison-tipped spikes.

I mean, obviously they'd constantly bash him as an "illegitimate president" despite having no problems with Bush, yadda yadda. My question is if Republican states/legislators would actually start proposing and passing NPV bills like many Democratic states did after 2000.

You'd probably see GOP legislators pushing for Maine/Nebraska systems rather than NPV.

Considering majority of states successfully pushed Voter ID laws, this wouldn't shock me if the GOP pushed for a national one.

We already see some state legislators trying to create Maine/Nebraska systems in states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, so I would expect to see more of that.

No, Democrats didn't do it after 2000 with Bush, why would Republicans do it with Obama?

They like to change the rules when they don't win.
