McCain is a tool. His record is too conservative for me in the classic sense as well, but that is not why I don't like him. For example, Senator Hatch is a rightist as well, but I have nothing against him. What makes McCain special is that he doesn't have the same value system vis-a-vis legislative consistency, human rights and civil liberties as do I, and this is particularly surprising coming from a member of the republican party. The McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill, which for some bizarre reason has thus far managed to meet constitutional muster by the current supreme court, is an effront to our most basic freedoms and immediately comes to mind, but we should also not consider his dismal record on economic interests as well. Consider his votes on: DC Vouchers, Gun manufacturers liability, extended unemployment, and let's not forget that 30-billion dollar increase on health care programs. Combine this anti-business record with his human rights record: surveillance, seat belt use, Gitmo prisoners, and the like, and you have what makes for a senator who really can't be trusted by either side. Neither small government types like myself, nor big intrusive government types like, for examply, BRTD, can really trust this man.
He is an ultra-nationalist. That's for sure, and ultimately that makes him a republican, as it makes me. but that's about where our similarities end. However, my disdain for McCain is not about issue-disagreement, and I have great respect for many on the far left and the far right, as long as they're consistent, but rather the problem with McCain regards what amounts to a complete misreading of the constitution on his part.
