I have recently confirmed my decision to attend the Citadel, a military college in South Carolina.  I was wondering what the Atlas Community thinks of the Citadel.  Do we have any Citadel alumni here?

I am from Charleston, and I had plenty of friends from high school go there. I hope you have a high tolerance for punishment. Your first year is going to be rough as a knob. Wink

Oh yes, I know, haha.    My dad went to the Citadel, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into.

But seriously, expect a lot of work. My friend goes to Norwich - AFAIK they're fairly similar, and he's getting by. Grades are good, but he has a very thick skin.

I have always wondered 1) just how accurate Pat Conroy was about The Citadel as he described that place, unnamed, in his novel The Lords of Discipline. and 2) to the extent accurate, just how much if any the place has changed since his depiction thereof, circa maybe 40 years ago now. And do the f****ts still gravitate per the urban legends of the place to the English Department?  Tongue

I just finished rereading The Lords of Discipline last night.  While I think the book is great, it does over exaggerate the knob year and "Taming" process.  There isn't nearly as much hazing as the book presents.

The only other person I know that goes there is someone from high school who's since unfriended me on Facebook (I'm assuming because he disagrees with me politically) Tongue .
