REPUBLIC OF ATLASIA - In Dave We Trust
Sample Ballot

This election is held in accordance with Article V of the Constitution and with the Consolidated Electoral System Reform Act. The regular election begins at 0:00 EDT, Friday, December 13, and ends at 0:00 EDT, Monday, December 16.

DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE THE POST CONTAINING YOUR BALLOT IN ANY WAY AFTER 20 MINUTES OF ITS BEING POSTED OR YOUR VOTE WILL BE INVALIDATED

The act of campaigning within the election booth is strictly forbidden and will render void any votes made by those who campaign. The act of campaigning is considered to include, but is not limited to, strong attempts to compel others either to vote or not to vote for one or multiple candidates, or other related activities that could reasonably be construed as a direct attempt to influence how future voters cast their ballots. In other words, this is not a discussion thread. In short, the department will be taking a liberal interpreation of this, so Keep posts to votes only.

Place the numbers 1, 2, etc. in the space provided beside the candidates who you wish to vote for to designate your order of preference for these candidates.  If any other mark or attempt to order the candidates is made, the Department of Forum Affairs will make every effort to deduce voter intent from the content of the ballot, but the warning must be issued that failure to follow the above instructions may result in the invalidation of your ballot in the event of an inability to discern voter intent.  You are an eligible voter in general if you were registered to vote on or before the proper date, and if you made 10 posts in any location within the Atlas Forum in the 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the regular election. In other words, if your name appears on the Census list, you can presume you are eligible.

In the event that you do not support any listed candidate or that you support one or many candidates that are not listed in addition to those that are, you may write in other candidates and include them in your list of preferences.  Space is provided for one such write-in, but as many can be listed as you wish.  In the event that you do not support any listed candidate, and do not wish to write in any candidate, you may place an X or a 1 beside "None of the above", and only beside "None of the above".  In the event that an X or a 1 appears beside "None of the above" on a ballot, all other marks or numbers will be ignored.  It is not permissible under current election law to vote for both "None of the above" and other candidates.

Note that voting begins at midnight and ends in exactly 72 hours.

Names of candidates follow in alphabetical order.

Mr. Secretary,

The Senate has voted with the required two-thirds of the number of Senators in the affirmative as set by the Constitution, to expell Senator Xahar for inactivity. His seat, At-Large #5 I believe, is thus vacant.

Regards,
Senator North Carolina Yankee,
Senate President Pro-Tempore.

Are you just telling me that because you're obligated to, Yankee? Thanks for keeping me informed, but surely you're aware that there won't be a special election held to fill that vacancy.

Because as a champion of inter-government interaction, I feel kind of necessitated to do so for reasons of consistency. Wink

Also because I like talking to you. Tongue

Finally, the rules compel me to do so regardless of the context.

Mr. Secretary,

Senator Tmthforu94 has resigned his At-Large #2 Senate seat and thus it will need to be filled via a special election.

Regards,
Senator North Carolina Yankee,

The special election to fill tmth's seat is scheduled for Friday Feb 28 - Sunday Mar 02.

What is the deadline for candidates to be on the ballot?
If it's before February 21 (one week before election) it doesn't leave much time to declare and for parties to select a candidate. Candidacies could also depend on what happens in this weekend's election.

The presumptive, unofficial winners are:

President/VP: Duke and Matt from VT
Northeast Senate: Bore
IDS Senate: NCYankee
Mideast Senate: DC al Fine
Pacific Senate: Tyrion the Imperialist

I will likely certify the Midwest Senate race to have ended in a tie. The mischief perpetrated by certain Midwest citizens within the voting booth has been nothing short of disgraceful, and those parties involved should feel some shame for what they have done.

Mr. Secretary, I am unsure as to how the law operates here, but I wish to concede the Midwest Senate race, if possible. If that's not possible, what are the options available?

Last I checked TNF had a 14-12 lead with Grant and Dead not voting and Julio invalid.

If Velasco invalidated his vote, TNF should still lead 13-12 no?

If Julio is counted as valid, it becomes a 13-13 tie.

My guess would be that the campaigning was on the presidential end of the ballot, so the senate end would still be valid. While the argument for it being invalid is that it could have directly influenced both races since it was a comment made about TNF, who was on the ballot for both these elections.

How did you determine who Lief intended to vote for for President?  What meaning did you give to his vote for "Sorry Duke"?

I made a post about this which you ignored. Tongue I suspect Homely has similar reasoning.

I am 95% sure in previous elections, this vote would have been counted. "Sorry Duke" is an expression Lief has used before in this board, so we can be sure of its intent; it's really no different than "All these candidates are great". As for not listing V.P. candidates, I am fairly sure examples of such votes being counted to the total regardless. Even if it were somehow invalid, it would ONLY invalidate his presidential vote (there's a precedent from the June 2013 election about this).

Julio's however, is blatantly invalid, as it disparages a candidate for both Senate and Vice President outright.

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=159644.msg3432368#msg3432368

Here is an example of a ballot on which the voter wrote "sorry (insert candidate's name)" here before proceeding to vote for his opponent. I do not recall any stink being made over this, and his vote was counted. Admittedly, this was a regional election, but the situation is not much different than this one.

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=169415.msg3629919#msg3629919

Here is Lief's presidential ballot from February. He wrote "Marokai for President" without listing a running mate and his vote was counted.

I can understand not counting Velasco's vote since he edited it after the 20 minute threshold, but why count Julio's? In the opening post to the Feb. 2014 Presidential election, it not only prohibited what Velasco did, but also what Julio did when attempting to turn the election into a discussion with more than just a vote, so I feel TNF should be declared the winner. His challenger, Lumine, already conceded anyways.

Also, to make it easier and avoid the name abbreviation "OABB", you could always just use Adam C. FitzGerald which I'm registered as in Atlasia. Wink
