The King of Florida unexpectedly dies in a plane crash while returning from a diplomatic visit to the IDS. The late king's younger brother and his eldest son both proclaim themselves to be legitimate heir to the throne; the royal family and the nation at large become bitterly divided. Rumors emerge that the late king's plane crash was the result of sabotage and that his brother's bid for the throne is covertly receiving the support of the IDS.

Faced with a three-front war, the IDS loses significant ground to both Texas and Florida.

In an attempt to "pacify" the warring states, Russia and China launch a joint task force to invade and occupy the western parts of the former United States. Hawaii and the other Pacific islands are fully occupied, with beach heads in Puget Sound and San Francisco Bay.

Just assume, I suppose, that other nations are just as balkanized as the US has become, or have otherwise become incredibly destabilized and/or isolationist.
