Why aren't Black Lives Matter people trying to disrupt or talk to Obama?


They always seem to try to guilt-trip white Democratic politicians (and sometimes Republicans), telling them how their past decisions have had a negative effect, and sometimes implying it was intentional racism. They don't want to endorse anyone in 2016. They say they want as President someone who they think actually believes "black lives matter" first.


Um, a black man is President. He has a black wife, and two black daughters, and a whole extended family too.

How does the BLM movement completely ignore this fact? They never even seem to acknowledge that he exists. And why haven't they tried "disrupting" Obama, or talking to Obama, or even the First Lady?

Because he's pretty firmly come down on the side of their cause more often than not, even pre-judging the police in cases where it turned out to not be accurate. It wouldn't make sense for them to alienate him.

That entire thing (Hillary talking to the BLM people) was really awkward.  I'm not really a fan of her or them, but I still felt bad for everybody involved.  The BLM people were trying to get something out of Hillary, but wanted to be sort of polite about it...and like jfern just said, she talked to them like they were 4 years old.

The Obama and Hillary thanks to taxpayers. The most absurd thing was the Hillary supporters attacking Sanders for having BLM get so close to him, when the Secret Service wouldn't have waited to figure out if BLM was actually a threat and used any means necessary to stop them if they were protecting Sanders at the Seattle event.

Because Obama is a lame duck. "Fire all Baltimore/Ferguson police officers" or "declare that black people can never be arrested" (which is what BLM seems to want) is probably beyond what he can do with an executive order.

Broken windows policing is practical and gets the job done. It's not racist.

It is disproportionately enforced in black and Hispanic areas. Look at the huge abuses police departments in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc. as well as smaller cities with large minority populations (small cities in the South and Great Plains states with meatpacking industries).

The problem with zero-tolerance policies towards crime is that they can quickly devolve into police brutality, with people literally getting a ticket for standing in front of their homes and talking to their neighbors for bullsh*t reasons like "obstructing traffic", which can go on your record and harm already-dim job prospects for black and Hispanic people in poor neighborhoods.

Broken windows policing is a thing of the past. It's not the 1980s and 1990s anymore. It has played a part in reducing crime, but the drop in crime since 1991 (we're at literally less than half the 1991 rate right now IIRC) has too many factors at play to fully credit broken windows policing. Additionally, even if it is a factor, what has the cost been? We have what, 2 million people locked up now? The failed War on Drugs? Problematic and deep-running community distrust of police? Racial profiling? Ostracization and further marginalization of the mentally ill, addicted, and other "undesireables"?

That is why there is so much anger and hatred towards broken windows theory policing. The alternative that has been implemented in many police departments has been community outreach programs, and focusing on restoring the economic viability of crime-plagued areas. Broken windows may have some positive effect, but the social and economic costs for it are just too high to justify, as the past 20 years has shown.
