Ideally, it would be a democrat that sticks to his guns relatively well and have been elected in a very conservative area. Brad Henry or Dave Fruedenthal look like good choices, but these oil-field democrats aren't very ambitious.

Putting Virginia in play would have forced Bush to defend more turf, making other battlegrounds like Ohio, New Mexico, Iowa, Nevada, and Florida a little more vulnerable and harder to defend. John Edwards never really put North Carolina in play.

And he may have said some "gaffes"... And on foreign policy matters, Bush campaign would have found many contrarian points between the 2. So, I'm not so sure. A risky choice.
