Title: Elliot Spitzer: A Second Chance
Post by: sentinel on September 29, 2009, 09:22:40 PM
Elliot Spitzer: A Second Chance

()

Elliot Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York on March 10th 2008, taking effect seven days later. Spitzer stayed out of public eye for months, and later joined Slate magazine. Slowly, Spitzer began to reemerge on the national spotlight talking about the financial crisis and his remedies for the situation. He was interviewed by Fareed Zakaria in 2009, and many pundits speculated on another political run for Spitzer in 2010.

Polls from September 2009:
Democratic Primary for Governor:

Paterson: 60%
Spitzer: 21%

Democratic Primary for Junior Senator from NY:

Gillibrand: 57%
Spitzer: 29%

With David Paterson’s job approval rating at an all time low of 23% in January 2010, pundits speculated that Spitzer may challenge Paterson in the primary, however; Cuomo would easily trounce both Spitzer and Paterson if he chose to run for Governor.

January 10th 2010

Spitzer is interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN regarding the Obama Administration’s first year and the handling of the financial crisis. Spitzer talked about that as well what could be expected in the year to come. Spitzer expects unemployment to go down, but not drastically and for the economy to begin expanding, since the most recent quarters GDP slowed slight economic growth.
Wolf Blitzer asks “with current Governor David Paterson’s approval ratings at an all time low, would you consider running for office again?” to which Spitzer replies “If I thought I could do something more than the other candidates for the people of New York, then yes, I would.”
“Will you run then?”
“We’ll see”

Andrew Cuomo announces he will challenge Kirsten Gillibrand for Democratic Nomination for the Junior United States Senator seat from New York against the wishes of the Obama Administration who had asked other candidates like Carolyn Maloney, Carolyn McCarthy and Steve Israel.
Most pundits think it will be to avoid any racial tension as with what happened when he challenged Carl McCall for the Democratic Nod for Governor, who was the first African-American Comptroller of New York.

January 20th 2010

Former Governor George Pataki announces he will run for the Republican Primary for Senator of New York, but is overshadowed by Elliot Spitzer’s announcement that he will run for Governor against David Paterson –saying that he has become weak since assuming governorship. Spitzer bashes Paterson for not being able to handle the leadership catastrophe in the New York State Senate and for not enacting better property tax reforms recommended by the Suozzi Commission.

He touches upon the prostitution scandal by saying that he is human, he has learned from it, and he believes in redemption.

Spitzer was introduced by his wife who praised him for changing his way of life, and saving their marriage by going through counseling. She says that Spitzer “is a great man, and sincerely wants to help the people of New York” and wholeheartedly endorses him.
Spitzer announces he will begin campaigning immediately listening to New Yorkers and trying to regain their trust. He announces he will publish weekly editorials in major newspapers in New York.

()
The Paterson responds by calling Spitzer a hypocrite that he picked Paterson for Lt. Governor because he was “strong” and now is calling the very person he selected weak. The Paterson campaign emphasizes that Paterson has made hard decisions that may not have been popular but were necessary.

February 10th 2010
During an interview on the Today Show, Rudy Giuliani is questioned on whether or not he will run for Governor.

()

Giuliani says although he is staunchly opposed to the re-election of Elliot Spitzer and less so, David Paterson, he will not be running for Governor. Giuliani speaks of how he would trounce both of them in the general election, but doesn’t have the desire to return to public office after his failed 2008 Presidential Campaign.

Giuliani refuses to endorse John Faso, the only other Republican running for Governor at this time.

February 12th 2010

Congressman Peter King announces his bid for the Republican Nomination for Governor of New York. He calls Spitzer unfaithful, dishonest and criticizes him for using state funds to pay for a hotel where his prostitute came to.
The Spitzer campaign responds and issues this in their response “As Governor, Elliot Spitzer did not misuse any state funds, and no criminal charges have ever been brought up against him.”

The Spitzer camp immediately swings into action and calls King uncompassionate and trying to get away from the issues and successfully spins the story into a negative one for King.

July 15th 2010

Elliot Spitzer has successfully restored part of his image. Paterson’s approval ratings are in the teens. Spitzer is lacking in endorsements, many would-be endorsers do not want to ruin their own reputation and do not endorse anyone.

Peter King continues to run on the fact that John Faso has lost to Spitzer already, in 2006.

Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, who ran against Spitzer for Governor in 2006, announces a bid for Lieutenant Governor. In a joint statement, Spitzer and Paterson both endorse him.

In the universe where Evan Bayh is on the ticket.

Less people voted in Ohio in 2008 than in 2004, and McCain had about 200k less voters than Bush did in 2004, so I was thinking that more republicans and moderates show up and vote for the Republican ticket. Indiana on the other hand I just thought MAY flip to the Democrats again if it was slim, or if a popular figure was from their state was on the ticket.

Governor Brian Schweitzer announces a bid for the Democratic nomination for President.

()

At 11:26pm, terrorists attempt to seize a major skyscraper in Seattle, Washington but are prevented by anti-terrorism forces who were tipped off just hours before the siege. Four terrorists are killed in the process, and two United States servicemen are killed.
President Barack Obama issues a statement that night, and addresses the nation the next night, in his speech he vows that the United States will remain the enemy of terrorists everywhere, and the two servicemen who died, died ensuring our freedom. He attends the funerals of the two servicemen the following week.

Later In May 2015

Governor Elliot Spitzer announces extra security precautions in New York City as a result and hosts a fundraiser, whose proceeds will go to help the two families and a charity.

Marsha Blackburn surprises the audience as she comes out swinging, citing various reasons why Charlie Crist isn’t a conservative, mainly because he supported the stimulus package.

Bobby Jindal’s performance is okay, he doesn’t stand out like many pundits said he needed to.

Mary Fallin doesn’t get much of the spotlight and when she does, she stumbles over her answers.

Charlie Crist responds to criticism well, saying that any political party needs to compromise, trying to appeal to moderates which is usually only seen in the general election.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson scores high but many people are still worried that she will be too old when inaugurated.

Eric Cantor’s performance is right behind Blackburn’s but comes off as arrogant.

38% of Republicans say Blackburn won the debate.

After the Republican Debate the Democrats take the stage.

Many were looking forward to seeing Schwartz’s performance in the debate, and she was seen as very timid during the debate. She answered questions well when asked, but did not stand out otherwise.

The Democrats primarily bicker over topics such as social security and energy independence. National security comes up, and Elliot Spitzer dominates the National Security discussion and questions Evan Bayh’s national security experience even as Vice President.

Mark Warner, although he didn’t make any major mistakes, did not seem to be able to regain the spotlight as easily as Bayh or Spitzer.

Brian Schweitzer’s performance was average.

30% of Democrats thought Spitzer was the winner.

Former President George Bush endorses Charlie Crist
()

Mike Huckabee endorses Marsha Blackburn

President Barack Obama flies to Iowa to campaign for Vice President Evan Bayh

Another big debate for both political parties takes place.

Republicans:

Bobby Jindal performs spectacularly better than he does in his other debates and competes at the same level as Crist and Blackburn for the first time. Hutchinson doesn’t grab the spotlight and Cantor comes off as angry and hot-headed. Fallin doesn’t spark and interest.
Bobby Jindal walks away the winner with 35% of Republicans behind him.

 Crist gets 32%, Blackburn, 23%

Democrats:

Vice President Evan Bayh and Senator Mark Warner go 2 on 1 with Elliot Spitzer and criticize him for having major character flaws. Spitzer responds by reiterating what he has done to make up or redeem him for any character flaws, and that any President is only human.
Spitzer’s favorability ratings don’t drop as a result, but he does drop in the polls slightly.
Schwartz, whose support has been falling, tries hard to stand out during the debate but instead accentuates any verbal blunders she has.

Warner walks away the winner with 39%

As a result of the primary, Evan Bayh stays in the lead, but Mark Warner overtakes Elliot Spitzer in national polls.

On the other side of the aisle, Blackburn overtakes Jindal  and Crist in national polls, and even though Jindal had a strong 2nd place finish, he narrowly falls behind in the polls to Crist.

Mary Fallin and Eric Cantor drop out of the race.

Rumor has it that if Governor Brian Schweitzer doesn’t finish in at least third in the New Hampshire primary, he will drop out.

The candidates fly to New Hampshire for another primary only a few days ahead.

As of January 9th, current polls show Crist with a large lead in South Carolina where his campaign has focused a lot of resources. Jindal begins campaigning in Nevada and Michigan.
There is also a quiet race for second place in Florida, all the candidates knowing that Crist will win Florida.

Elliot Spitzer pursues a similar strategy and skips South Carolina and campaigns in Michigan and Florida instead. Evan Bayh and Mark Warner stump in South Carolina –Warner hoping for his first win and Bayh hoping to stop Spitzer’s momentum from New Hampshire.

South Carolina Primary Results:

Democrats:

Mark Warner: 40.23%

Evan Bayh: 31.32%

But I don't think Charlie Crist is gay, although its definitely been speculated. Hasn't he been seen with a girlfriend?

February 1st 2016

New York Times: A senior campaign aide for Senator Mark Warner said that Warner will consider dropping out if it helps knock Elliot Spitzer, if Warner does poorly on Super Tuesday.
Warner’s spokesman responds saying the aide is wrong and Mark Warner is in it to win it.

February 2nd 2016 – Super Tuesday

Elliot Spitzer campaigns in Illinois on the morning of Super Tuesday and flies back to New York for another campaign event by the late afternoon.

Evan Bayh is campaigning in Colorado, where the polls are close between Warner, Spitzer and Bayh.

Mark Warner campaigns in Georgia.

Charlie Crist, who many pundits are saying will win the nomination, campaigns in Marsha Blackburn’s home state of Tennessee. Blackburn Is also in Tennessee campaigning.

Republican Analysis:

Charlie Crist dominates the night and wins all the “big prizes” of the night such as New York, Illinois and California. Blackburn manages to win a few southern and western states. All pundits expect Blackburn to drop out sometime in the next few days.
()

Democratic Analysis:

Pundits say that if Mark Warner drops out and endorses Bayh, then Bayh still has a chance at the nomination, but right now Warner is hurting Bayh. Warner came in second place in every state Bayh won except for Illinois.

February 5th 2016

Marsha Blackburn drops out of the Presidential race and endorses Charlie Crist.

Crist becomes the presumptive nominee for the Republicans.

March 3rd 2016

One day before the Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont primaries the candidates are locked in dead head in Texas and all three participate in the Texas Primary Debate.

Mark Warner and Evan Bayh go negative during the debate and hint at Spitzer’s past and his resignation as Governor in 2008. Spitzer responds harshly and bluntly with “I apologized to the people of New York, and the people of the United States for my actions in the past. I have learned from them, and the people of New York have forgiven me by electing me two more times. I’ve turned around New York from financial devastation –and clearly, you have no issue with my policies, because you’re resorting to dirty strategies that the Republicans won’t even use in their campaign.” To which he received a huge applause.

Also during the debate, Spitzer details a very liberal agenda for illegal immigrants, trying to pander to the Hispanic vote. Bayh and Warner reject Spitzer’s plan citing their own.

Elliot Spitzer also wins Rhode Island and Vermont by large margins.

March 5th 2016:

Mark Warner drops out of the Presidential race.

()

Warner is asked by a reporter if he will endorse anyone, and he says not yet.

Democratic Nomination Analysis:

Spitzer is likely to win Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico in the following months. His campaign has put a lot of money into North Carolina which is a tossup along with South Dakota (for some bizarre reason). Indiana, Montana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi and Wyoming are all likely to go to Bayh. Even if Bayh wins the tossups, pundits say that Spitzer is still going to have the nomination unless an extreme amount of super delegates go over to Bayh.
Democratic Nomination National Poll:

Evan Bayh: 50%

Elliot Spitzer: 45%
Unsure: 5%

Pundits dismiss the national polls because the majority of the country has already voted.

March 10th 2016:
New York Times reports that Evan Bayh and Elliot Spitzer meet secretly on March 6th to discuss the Democratic nomination. An aide says Evan Bayh approached Elliot Spitzer to discuss “matters important to both campaigns” and the conversation was “unpleasant” but Bayh “came out of the conversation with the answers he wanted.”

Spitzer aides confirm the meeting and refuse to comment on the topic discussed or the tone of the conversation.

Bayh aides refuse to comment.

Will Evan Bayh drop out and pave the way for Spitzer; or will he stay in and try to take a super-majority of super-delegates to seal the nomination?

No, I honestly do like it. I was joking earlier about the gay Senator and the horny Gov. But Crist recently tied the knot with NYC socialite Carole Rome and she is quite able to stuff his coffers.

I’m going to try to calculate the number of delegates each has at this point and my math will be very flimsy so please just tolerate it haha…I'm using 2008 numbers since it is impossible to know what they'll be in 2016.

Spitzer Delegate: 1413 Delegates (33.2% of primary delegates)
Bayh Delegates: 1086 Delegates (25.6%)
Former Warner Delegates: 980 Delegates (23.2%)
Former Schwartz Delegates (she got some in South Carolina!): 9 (0.2%)
Remaining: 741 (17.5%)
Total Super Delegates: 873

Brief Analysis:
Since Schwartz endorsed Spitzer, her delegates will presumably go to Spitzer.
Spitzer would have to win 702 of the remaining delegates in order to get a majority of elected delegates, which is impossible with Bayh in the race.

Bayh, wouldn’t be able to claim a majority of delegates from the primaries regardless and would have to rely on super delegates…

Including Super Delegates, candidates would need 2,551 to have a majority. There are 873 super delegates and 741 remaining. Spitzer needs 1,138 delegates to have a majority…71% of the total remaining delegates.

Bayh would need 1,465 more delegates to have a majority which is 91% of the remaining delegates.

However, if Mark Warner’s delegates split favorably to Bayh, then Bayh could easily steal the nomination from Spitzer. This would give the Republicans a huge advantage, having already chosen their candidate. The Republicans will be able to gain a lot of ground in the months up until the Democratic convention.

Is the Democratic nod worth getting off to a very very late and rough start for Evan Bayh?

The New York Post says it has “an anonymous source” who has supplied a list of possible Vice Presidential Candidates for Senator Charlie Crist. The source confirmed that there is one very big name that is a wildcard, but refused to release it.

March 17th 2016

The Crist Camp refuses to confirm any of the names on the list.

March 18th 2016

Three of Bayh’s senior aides quit, including his campaign manager, showing the skepticism of future of the campaign.

Spitzer’s spokesman criticizes the Bayh campaign saying “they can’t keep their own staff, together how will he keep the country together?”

Bayh’s spokesman responds with “the character of our candidate isn’t measured in the staff he surrounds himself with, it’s measured in achievements and his decisions in life, unfortunately the same cannot be said about Governor Spitzer.”

The Spitzer campaign calls for the resignation of the spokesman and the Bayh camp refuses.

A war of words erupts between the two campaigns.

May 1st:
Mark Warner endorses Elliot Spitzer at a campaign event and asks his supporters to support (what he calls) the Democratic nominee Elliot Spitzer.

Why the Southwest is a toss up: The influx of Hispanics has boosted the Democratic Party’s presence in the southwest. The Obama Administration helped legalize over 750,000 immigrants of Hispanic origin.
Spitzer’s favorability ratings are also significantly better in the southwest than the southeast…however Spitzer’s past has made Pennsylvania and Maine a toss up also.
Obama’s Approval Rating is at 53% after inflation hits 2%...also the budget deficit is still in the trillions. Many people are worried about another financial meltdown.

Former Governor Gary Johnson of New Mexico!

Charlie Crist says he picked Johnson because of his strong policies of fiscal restraint while Governor of New Mexico.

Pundits on both sides are criticizing and applauding the decision.  Republicans say that Johnson is a self-made man, who worked his way to be Governor and that he showed courage in vetoing over 750 bills, and endlessly working to make government smaller and more familiar to the people.

Some liberal Democrats like the pick, since Johnson was on the Board for Students for Sensible Drug Policy, while others criticize him for privatizing prisons in New Mexico during his administration and shifting Medicaid to managed care.

Yeah. This is realistic. lol. So Senator Crist picks a guy to be his VP who hasn't served in public office for FOURTEEN YEARS? The thing you should have done would have been to look at the 2010 elections and pick somone from the list of current candidates who are bound to be future players on the national scene. A candidate like future Governor Josh Penry of Colorado or Meg Whitman would have been the perfect pick.

Trying to make it interesting --but the poll before the map was May, and the map was for July. I didn't include another head-to-head matchup...it was much closer, then Spitzer's ratings dropped again during the RNC.

I did look at the 2012 candidates, etc and Johnson was on there. He was in the national spotlight in 2012 during my timeline, and he could have stayed active after that --but I didn't look at many more potential 2010 Governors.

You make a good point, and I'll fix it with a twist.

Governor Culver served as Governor of Iowa from 2006 – 2014. After his term ended, President Barack Obama appointed him to a special research council on education.

Democrats: Democrats applaud the nomination. Culver was a dark horse candidate who will appeal to the Breadbasket Democrats in the Midwest…It will give geographic balance to the ticket and looks less elitist than Spitzer.

Republicans:  Republicans argue that Culver isn’t ready for the national spotlight and that he is inexperienced and too far left.

After the announcement, the Crist campaign releases a brief statement congratulating Governor Culver and then announcing that Former Governor Gary Johnson is in the hospital with serious injuries from the car accident.

Spitzer/Culver: 47%
Unsure: 3%

October 10th 2016:

The Second Presidential Debate takes place, this time it’s on the economy.  Spitzer puts Crist in the gutter when he speaks about how Crist supported the Democratic Stimulus plan anyway, and also talks about he put more restrictions on Wall Street, and his achievements as Governor. Spitzer analyzes how to control the rising inflation rate while he says Crist merely says what the Republicans want and not what will really help.

Winner of the Debate:
Spitzer: 50%
Crist: 30%
Unsure: 20%

October 21st 2016

The Third Presidential Debate is a town hall format and both candidates take questions from the audience ranging from social security to national security to what their favorite type of food is.
Spitzer hammers away at how his immigration reform program will be much more effective and cost effective than Crist’s plan.

Winner of the Debate:

Spitzer: 40%
Crist: 38%

November 1st 2016:

Polling:

Crist/Whitman: 51%

Spitzer/Culver: 47%

Spitzer National Favorability Ratings:

Area – Favorable/Unfavorable/Unsure(or never heard of)
Northeast – 60/30/10
South – 27/56/17
Central:  48/41/11
West – 53/34/13

Obama Approval Rating: 53%
Unemployment: 5%
Inflation: 2.5%

NOVEMBER 8TH 2016 – ELECTION DAY

(
)

Charlie Crist / Meg Whitman – Republican Party – 270 EV – 67,887,333 PV (51%)
Elliot Spitzer / Chet Culver – Democratic Party – 269 EV -- 64,552,750 PV (48%)
Minor Candidates: 1,306,611 PV

At 11:27pm, Elliot Spitzer called President-elect Charlie Crist to concede to him. Even though Texas wasn’t called on election night, Charlie Crist had captured the magic number either way.
The Texas vote flipped due to a high turnout of new Hispanic immigrants, which pundits called “electoral map shattering.”

At midnight Elliot Spitzer gave his concession speech to America, thanking them for giving him a second chance.

()

Charlie Crist at his victory speech thanked Spitzer, and said that he has truly redeemed himself. Crist adds in “there may be a place for Elliot in my cabinet if he’s willing to accept”

()

In the United States Senate:

Democrats: 55
Republicans: 45

No change in the composition of the US Senate.

In the United States House of Representatives:

Democrats: 239 (+9)
Republicans: 199 (-9)

Gains in the House for Democrats.

Possibly coming up (if I get positive responses): I have an idea that I call "The Catastrophe"

January 1st 2017
Obama Approval Rating: 55%
Crist Favorability Rating: 80%
Unemployment: 4.8%
Inflation: 2.7%

Wednesday, January 20th 2017

The first African American President, President Barack H. Obama leaves office. He leaves on a high note with an approval rating around 55%. The now former President  gave thanks to the people who elected him a few nights before, and cites his accomplishments during two terms such as; ending the war in Iraq, although there is still violence, Iraqi Security forces are able to handle it.

The United States is perceived better internationally, being part of a global nuclear proliferation initiative and as well as making changes to improve its energy independence. Some measures of Obama’s health care reform have been passed, such as stricter regulations on insurance companies, but there was never a public option.

Osama Bin Laden has not been caught, and is presumed dead by local reports in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The United States has about 5,000 troops left in Afghanistan at permanent bases.
What’s Coming Up for the Christ Administration?

The Obama Administration managed to silence Iran in 2011 on its nuclear weapons program and let inspectors come in and they did stop immediately pursuing their nuclear ambitions; however; they still have the capacity to create nuclear weapons quickly and a few radical skeptics believe they already have one. Israel has said it will strike Iran if they restart their program.

The Israel and Palestine conflict continues…the Obama Administration had been able to help keep long cease fires, but as they had during the Bush Administration, the ceasefires never lasted.

North Korea is becoming more and more isolated as China backs away from it as a partner in, well, anything. Intelligence reports show that the level of poverty in North Korea has increased dramatically and they are blowing the trumpets of war, saying that capitalism is causing their pain
.
Japan has mobilized an extensive military force in the past 8 years, and South Korea has been ready.

…and Charlie Crist is inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States.

Crist’s wife gets completely sloshed at the Inauguration.

March 2017
Charlie Crist pushes what he calls a “Compromised Budget & Economic Plan” through Congress which was written by Treasury Secretary Elliot Spitzer, a Democrat, along with President Crist and with Crist’s senior staff. The bill passes with roughly half of each party supporting it.
Crist Approval Rating February 2017: 78%
Crist Approval Rating August 2017: 70%

Crist keeps record high approval ratings by governing from the center. The left is incredibly upset and so is the far right, but the majority of people are extremely happy with his job performance so far.
No major problems for Crist have occurred yet, and he hasn’t won a noble peace prize yet either.

November 6th 2017:
7:18am – President Charlie Crist arrives in the Oval Office for his morning briefings.
8:00am – A Washington DC police officer, Chahel Chakor  enters the basement of the US Captiol with several large packages labeled “office supplies.”
10:00am – Chahel Chakor lets in several people into a storage room in the US Captiol
6:00pm – The United States Senate & House of Representatives begins to gather in the US Capitol, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Majority Leader Arrive
6:58pm – Vice President Meg Whitman arrives in Washington, DC.
7:25pm –Chief Justice John Roberts arrives at the US Capitol
7:35pm – President Charlie Crist’s motorcade leaves for the US Capitol
7:49pm – President Charlie Crist arrives at the US Captiol to give a major policy speech on education
7:57pm – Senator Andrew Cuomo hears an odd sound, and looks up into the ceiling. He thinks he sees a shadow but thinks nothing of it.
8:00pm – The Sergeant-At-Arms announces the President of the United States
8:05pm –President Charlie Crist begins to address the Senate and House.
8:07pm – The Representatives and Senate all stand and applaud the President.
   8:07pm –Gunfire breaks out.
8:09pm –An explosion rips through the floor of the chamber; smoke and debris block the sight. Gunfire is heard coming from both the floor and from the upper part of the chamber or the ceiling. Screaming.
One Senator looks back as he runs out of the chamber and can make outseveral bodies near the podium.

One Senator looks back as he runs out of the chamber and can make out several bodies near the podium.

8:10pm – America is in a state of shock, with a few million people having watched the beginning of the gunfire live. The media can confirm, through tapes, that the President was definitely shot before the bomb went off.
The Secret Service have already begun moving Secretary of the Interior Mitch Daniels who was the designated survivor. Mitch Daniels is moved to an undisclosed location.
8:11pm – More police and ambulances begin to arrive at the capitol. Several infantry units are on their way.
8:20pm – Apache helicopters land on the South Lawn & around Capitol Hill
8:25pm –A federal judge says that the designated survivor is constitutionally the Acting President until survivors are found above Daniels in the line of succession.
The US Army seizes the Capitol and White House.
8:26 –Acting President Mitch Daniels orders all planes to be grounded, and goes to DEFCOM2 and EMERGCON.
8:30 –Elliot Spitzer is pulled out of the south wing, and says Jindal is still alive but barely. Word quickly spreads that if JIndal is alive, he would be President.
8:32 –Capitol Police confirm that the President and Vice President are dead.
8:34 –Secret Service throw Elliot Spitzer into a car and whisk him away.
8:38 –Secret Service confirm that the casualties are in the hundreds and that it is likely that the Senate Pro Tempore and Speaker are both dead.
8:40 –Bobby Jindal, barely alive is found and transported to George Washington Hospital.

I'll make another update tonight.

Wolf Blitzer on CNN: What a horrible tragedy…right now we can confirm that Secretary of the Interior Mitch Daniels is the Acting President at a secure location. Washington DC and the surrounding area are completely locked down as Federal Officers look for anyone associated with the attack at the Capitol.

()

Wolf Blitzer turns to a pundit: Right now, we know that two people who are above Mitch Daniels in the line of succession are alive…Secretary of State Bobby Jindal and Secretary of the Treasurey Elliot Spitzer. Reports confirm that Spitzer looked relatively okay for someone who just went through an attack, and we know Jindal is in the hospital. Now that we know who is alive, does this create a Constitutional Crisis? Is Jindal technically the Acting President?

Pundit: Well, Wolf its fairly complicated but because Spitzer and Jindal weren't immediately able to discharge Presidential duties, Daniels became the Acting President. Congress, can dismiss him at anytime by appointing a Speaker, or a President Pro Tempore of the Senate --who would then become President, however; it is unclear to me if Presidential powers are technically Jindals. As long as they aren't fighting over who is President...I think we'll manage to get through this...

8:42  –Capitol Police confirm that the Pro Tempore and Speaker were killed in the initial gunfire.

More updates tonight.

(My source for the succession stuff has been http://www.fed-soc.org/publications/pubID.123/pub_detail.asp which seems pretty logical but not enough to answer all my questions)

44th: Barack Obama (D-IL), January 20, 2009 - January 20, 2017
45th: Charlie Crist (R-FL), January 20 - November 6, 2017
Acting: Mitch Daniels (R-IN), November 6, 2017
46th: Bobby Jindall (R-LA), November 6, 2017 - present

(I give Jindall a "number", assuming he's permanent successor as highest ranking survivor for now)

Btw, what about congressional casaulties beside Speaker and pro tem?

*Generic “Senator” is what I’m using as a seat that changes at some point from 2009 to 2017, which I didn’t want to go and predict unless I have to, or I’ll come back and add a name in front of “Senator” if its relevant later. I made seat changes for almost everyone born before 1937 before killing anyone off.

Democrats: 220 (-11)
Republicans: 219 (+11)

4:34am – Secretary of the Treasury Elliot Spitzer is sworn in as Acting President.  In order to give Mitch Daniels (who is now a private citizen again), clearance to be in the bunker and hear military briefings with Spitzer, Elliot Spitzer temporarily makes Daniels his Chief of Staff

I think Daniels is rather returning to Secretarship of the Interior now, than became private citizen (Speaker and pro tem are required to step down in order to become Acting Presidents, but because they cannot serve in two branches of government at once. Secretaries are in executive branch already).

By the way, since I've been reading a lot about scenarios of succession, I believe that Jindall is now 46th President of the United States, as Crist is dead and he's highest ranking survivor. He don't need to taking an oath to become President.

But, since Jindall is unable to perform any duties, the next survivor and now first in line, Spitzer, is Acting President.

7:00am – Iran launches several missiles at Israel, 10% of them hit their designated targets.

7:15am – Acting President Spitzer activates all military forces in the Middle East.  The Acting President threatens retaliation for the strike against Israel.

9:50am – Secretary of State Bobby Jindal dies. Pundits question whether he was the 46th President of the United States.

10:00am – All of the newly appointed Senators arrive, and after deliberation the Democrats appoint Russ Feingold as their majority leader, and the Republicans appoint Saxby Chambliss as their majority leader. Negotiations begin on who they will pick to be the next President of the United States, or the next interim one. The majority and minority leader receive a military briefing from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

10:30am – Acting President Spitzer addresses the nation. He expresses the anger that everyone feels about the tragedies of November 6th. He explains to the public who did it, what actions he and then Acting President Mitch Daniels took. He also explains how the new Senate is meeting, and deciding on the next President.

During the speech, military officials confirm that Iran is mobilizing on its border with Iraq. The Democratic Iraqi Government condemns the buildup of forces saying Iraq “is a peaceful nation that will not be used as a pathway for war.”

More Syrian forces build up on its border with Israel.

11:00am – Israel issues a warning to Syria, stop building up or they will attack.

11:15am – Israeli Military Aircraft buzz the Prime Minister of Syria’s mansion

Senators Present at the Negotiations:
Democrats: 47
Republicans: 31
Hospitalized: 22 (16R, 6D)

Political Pundits: Most think that the Democrats will push for a moderate Republican President like Crist, and the Democrats would not let the Republicans push a very right wing candidate. Feingold has already pledged to vote in a Republican.

I think legally after Crist death and becoming highest living survivor, Jindall authomatically became President or Acting President (just a protocol matter) for the rest of the term. Now, Spitzer is President or Acting President for the rest of the term. Choosed President pro tem would not became then President.

So, IMO, the list is:

45th: Charlie Crist
46th: Bobby Jindall
Acting: Mitch Daniels
Acting: Eliot Spitzer
47th: Eliot Spitzer

November 7th: The Day After - Continued

Political Pundits: Most think that the Democrats will want a moderate Republican President like Crist, and the Democrats would not let the Republicans push a very right wing candidate. Feingold has already pledged to vote in a Republican.

12:07pm – Israel bombs Tehran again, Iran demands that Israel stop the bombings or face complete annihilation. Israel’s foreign minister demands for the ousting of the current President and the Ayatollah.

12:30pm – Reports come in that many of Iran’s missile sites have been bombed.
3pm – The Senators present agree unanimously to appoint Lisa Murkowski as President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Murkowski will ascend to the Presidency upon the resignation of President Elliot Spitzer thereby removing Elliot Spitzer from office, and making her President of the United States, as well as the first women President. Congress is not required to call for a new election but in a joint statement Feingold and Chambliss say they reserve the right to do so.  President Pro Tempore is traditionally the longest serving member of the majority party, but the Senators present chose to do away with the custom in order to appoint Murkowski.
()

3:15pm – President Pro Tempore of the Senate Lisa Murkowski arrives in the White House, greeted by President Elliot Spitzer.

3:20pm – President Elliot Spitzer and President Pro Tempore Lisa Murkowski, with Senator Feingold and Chambliss enter the oval office and speak privately.

4:20pm – President Elliot Spitzer resigns from office, President Pro Tempore Lisa Murkowski ascends the Presidency. She is the first female President of the United States

44th President of the United States: Barack H. Obama~ – 1/20/2009 – 1/20/2017
45th President of the United States: Charles J. Crist – 1/20/2017 – 11/6/2017
46th President of the United States: Piyush “Bobby” Jindal* 11/6/2017 – 11/7/2017
47th President of the United States: Eliot Laurence Spitzer** 11/7/2017 – 11/7/2017
48th President of the United States: Lisa Ann Murkowski*** – 11/7/2017

~ - First African American President
*First Indian American President
**First Jewish President
***First Women President

4:30pm – President Murkowski enters the Situation Room and is briefed on what is happening in the global community and the response the United States and Israel has received. Intelligence informs her that Iran is hesitant to attack Israel because Iran does not know how the international community will respond.  Russia and China were supportive of the United States’ retaliation of the November 6th attacks, but not of Israel’s attacks.

Russia and China are demanding that the United States condemn Israel’s “unwarranted” attacks on Iran. The European Union is supportive of Israel and the United States, even though it claims Israel’s provocation of Iran wasn’t a great idea.

Intelligence believes that Syria will invade Israel within days and that Syria is the only real threat. Intelligence officials are confident that Israel can handle Syria. Iran is a threat via-missiles but Iraq has refused to allow military movement through their nation. Jordan and Egypt have condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran, while Saudi Arabia, a staunch US ally, and Turkey (now in the European Union) remain silent.

Intelligence officials do not see Egypt or Jordan mobilizing in any way.

However, the source of the attacks is a neo-Islamic fundamentalist wing of (the former) Al-Qaeda in Iran and they have claimed responsibility.

Intelligence officials suggest that Murkowski ask India to investigate several organizations that are known to harbor these terrorists. Most of these places are located in western India on the border with Iran.

Military officials say that there are more camps in Iran that need to be taken out. Murkowski orders the state department to demand Iran to bring them organizer of the attacks, and all the terrorists to justice. If they do so, as well as destroy the camps on their own, the United States will use its flexibility to ask Israel to stop the bombings.

6:30pm
The remaining members of the House of Representatives meet 15 miles outside the capital at an undisclosed military location. The final headcount for the House of Reps is…

227 Representatives were killed (101 Republicans, 126 Democrats)
 185 are present.  (77 Democrats, 108 Republicans)
and 27 are hospitalized (17 Democrats, 10 Republicans)

The House of Representatives passes various motions expressing their anger and sadness about what happened on November 6th.

The Republicans elect Cathy Rodgers from Washington’s 5th District as the Speaker of the House, and Paul Ryan as the House Majority Leader.

The Democrats elect Chris Murphy from Connecticut’s 5th District as their Majority leader, and secretly elect Dan Maffei of New York’s 25th District to be their Speaker when they retake the majority.

November 8th
9:00pm – President Lisa Murkowski addresses the nation in a very somber tone. She pays respect to the Senators, Congressman, staffers, and servicemen that died in the attack on the US Capitol and says the Senate and House of Representatives will return to the Capitol, and the United States is doing everything in its power to find the people that did this. Live on television, she asks our allies abroad to do all that is necessary and proper to immediately track down terrorists in their backyards, saying that terrorist are not only a threat to the United States, but everyone who values freedom.
She says that she will serve the remainder of the term, and she recognizes that she was not elected to be President. She thanks Eliot Spitzer for graciously stepping down from the Presidency to allow a member of the opposing party, the party that was originally elected, to take the Presidency. She calls him a redeemed man of virtue and a true American.
President Murkowski lets the people know that she will address Congress in the following weeks about her plans for the Presidency

Multilateral negotiations continue and a ceasefire has been reached between Israel, Syria and Iran.

Murkowski’s administration is questioned on why they are not part of the negotiations and their response is “our presence in the negotiations in the past 20 years and more has not solved the problem yet; maybe our absence from it will remove tensions. Also, if any of the sides ask for our involvement, we will join the negotiations as a mediator.”

Pundits ask if substantial reform like this would be able to pass the House, and the other to write a constitutional amendment or bill (depending on their findings) that would modify the line of succession and procedures relating to that based on the Continuity of Government Commission in 2003.

Murkowski also begins the push for a large federal school voucher program to get passed this year.

And what looks Obama and Clinton retirement?

Biden resigned due to health complications, more specifically, heart complications from eating all those burgers with Obama during the Presidency. I probably should have included it, but lets assumed he died within a year of resigning. He would have been given a state funeral.

In my TL, Cheney also passes away during the second term of Barack Obama's Presidency. It is noteworthy that a few weeks before his passing, he appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Obama would have praised Cheney for his commitment to national security and to the nation.

Carter died on November 6th 2017, but for good reason, didn't get much media attention.

Bush Sr. died in the beggining of Charlie Crist's administration.

Gore...I forgot about him...he's around...I'll fix that...

I'll think about the Obama post-presidency and Clinton's before I say anything.

January  2019

President Lisa Murkowski’s second State of the Union Address. She doesn’t have many accomplishments that appeal to the Republican base but has appealed to some moderates. Her approval rating is back up to 50% and her favorability is higher.
She outlines broad policy goals in her State of the Union, and mentions the continue effort for energy reform but her policies for that still are vague and she hasn’t pressed it much in the past year due to the preoccupation with school vouchers.
She also announces that she will run for “election.”

Senate Majority Leader Russ Feingold announces he will run for the Democratic Nomination for President. He is 65 years old.

Congressman Glenn Nye of Virginia announces that he will run for President. He is 44 years old.

Murkowski is criticized by Republicans and Democrats for not supporting Israel but the administration says it wants the problem in the middle-east solved for good this time.

The report from the new commission on the continuity of government comes back, and recommends the addition of several people in the line of succession outside of Washington, including 3 Governors that would be recommended to the Senate by the President and then approved by the Senate. The 3 Governors would appear in the line of succession after the Homeland Security Secretary.

Throughout the summer and winter, Murkowski and Feingold  campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, where they both have huge leads in their respective primaries.
Feingold also campaigns around the nation, and many say he is already the presumptive nominee since Glenn Nye, has never polled more than 20% while Feingolds polling ranges from 50 – 60%.

The First Presidential Debate:
Murkowski comes off as uninformed when she stumbles on questions regarding national security and the economy, while Feingold dominates the debate. York, who was allowed to participate, comes off slightly radical but well informed. Feingold comes off as a progressive and a reformer.

Eliot Spitzer does an interview with ABC & NBC about what he will be doing after the election.  Spitzer goes into detail about how he will stay out of the national spotlight and will be joining the Clinton Foundation and doing work for them. He explains how he looks back and admires Clinton and his administration and he still thinks he has a lot to learn from the Former President. As of now, Eliot Spitzer has been Governor of New York, the Democratic Nominee for President, Secretary of the Treasury, Acting President, President and now is campaigning for Russ Feingold.

Former President Barack Obama also appears on an interview before the election. He talks about how Feingold was discussed in the Senate as Presidential material and he thinks Feingold will win in a landslide. The former President has his own foundation that aims to support children around the world in regards to education, health care, hunger and basic needs. He also started another foundation that’s goal is to help Africa develop.

Former Vice President Al Gore is still active and advocating for reforms in the Electoral College.
In the international light, Israel is sanctioned by the UN for not returning to negotiations.
Murkowski continues to defend Mitch Daniels whose multiple affairs have grown more and more complicated. There is wild speculation that Murkowski will kick Daniels off the ticket. Murkowski denies rumors.

The second Presidential debate occurs, and it is town hall format.
Russ Feingold says that if Republicans want a conservative, that Murkowski isn’t it and says how she hasn’t done anything in the 3 years she has been President. Murkowski tries to point out some of her bipartisan accomplishments but Russ Feingold hits back and says all those bills started in the Senate or House and the administration did nothing to further them. York is in the debate, but he comes off once again as a radical and doesn’t offer real insight to anything.
Feingold walks away the winner of the debate.

The third Presidential debate is cancelled due to disagreements between the campaigns…there are leaks from the Murkowski campaign that say that Murkowski didn’t want to face Feingold in a third debate.

November 4th 2020 Election Day:
Most pundits, even on Fox News are predicting that due to Murkowski’s low approval ratings and low polling that Feingold will win the election easily. This would be the first landslide since Obama’s win in 2008 if this comes true.
