Title: Brett Favre endorses Bush
Post by: NHPolitico on November 01, 2004, 10:31:17 AM
Favre has recorded an endorsement that is being phoned to households all across Wisconsin.  He refers to the Redskins game's supposed power to predict the outcome on Tuesday.

I fail to see why this matters more than Hollywood movie stars supporting Kerry.

If anything, it's less significant; at least the Hollywood stars are voting against their own economic self interest. People making millions of dollars per year supporting Bush seems fairly unnewsworthy. It's only logical that Favre, Schilling and other athletes would support Bush's tax policies over Kerry's.

Doesn't change my opinion of Favre at all; he's still my favorite NFL player.

Does he refer to "Lambert Field?"

Not all that surprising.  He's an athlete, and from Mississippi.  I think it could have a minor impact, and in Wisconsin every little bit is going to help.

Unlike movie stars, sports stars have an appeal to the very NASCAR dads that campaigns are after.  Movie stars are often seen as being lofty and out of touch, as if they don't work hard (nothing could be further from the truth, they are among the hardest workers in America).  Sports stars however are seen as hard working, down to earth guys that lay it all on the field for the fans.  The demographic appeal makes them actually effective.

They also have a regional affect.  There are two worshipped beings in Wisconsin, Brett Favre and Jesus Christ.  If Brett Favre calls you and says, "Vote Bush because he shares your values." And your one of the fans who's on the six year waiting list for Packers tickets, you will indeed be more inclined to vote Bush.  This especially goes for those who are only leaning towards voting at all, or those who are undecided because they don't follow the race as closely as they should.  Their thinking is as follows: "Brett Favre shares my values, Brett Favre endorsed Bush, therefore Bush must share my values, therefore I will vote Bush over the guy who thinks the Packers play at Lambert Field."  Schilling may have a similar effect in New Hampshire, which is Red Sox country.
