Does anyone watch this? I'm halfway into season 2 and it's the best comedy I've seen on tv since Arrested Development.

It doesn't do much for me, but it's one of the better things on network TV. But that's definitely not saying much. :(

I was just realizing how much I hate almost everything on network TV the other day... Premium cable is where it's at!

It is true it has been going down hill. Really there's 3 eras of the office, The Early Era (everyone loved), the Pam and Jim are married now era and Jim is co-manager (ok) and the Sabre now owns you era (which sucks unless it's an episode with Jo)

I actually think it started going downhill a lot earlier than that, when Jim and Pam started going out (at the beginning of Season 4?). I liked the first two and a half seasons, got a little frustrated when Jim left, was happy when he came back, but then disappointed that a whole facet (and the best, IMO) of the awkward humor disappeared with the beginning of the relationship.

Jeff and Annie aren't that annoying and we're supposed to not like Pierce and Britta.  Shirley is just filler....well, very good filler.  The secondary characters are almost all gold.  The Dean is great, Chang is great, the Brittish guy from the Daily Show is great.  Troy and Abed are just comedy gold and make everyone else look bad in comparison.

Abed's pretty excellent as an observer, but he's the flattest character, and it shows when they try to make him the focus of an episode. Donald Glover is amazing, and Troy's my favorite character. His development as a character is one of the better things that's happened in this season.

I don't understand how anybody could dislike Annie.

I dislike Chang, to be honest. His persona is just a little grating. Also, I agree that Abed is somewhat one-dimensional, but I think it's mostly the inability of a young actor to really blossom into a multi-faceted role. He'll get there, eventually. Regardless, the one dimension he portrays is still rather funny, although it's getting old.

Brita isn't supposed to be funny, she's just a love-interest. Which they amusingly reference in one of the episodes, sort-of.

Pierce is probably my favourite character and I agree with Dead that the secondary characters are actually the best thing about the show.

Chang was good as the crazy Spanish teacher, but he hasn't had a well-defined place in the second season. It doesn't help that he's not in a number of episodes; it renders him more easily expendable.

Community is absolutely the best comedy on network TV right now. It's a show unafraid to take chances -- sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. When it does pay off, though, it pays off in a big way.

The best episodes this year have easily been the Halloween one, the Apollo spoof (S.A.N.D.E.R.S. <3), and their show two weeks ago, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

Title: Re: Community
Post by: Akno21 on February 17, 2011, 10:41:27 PM
Isn't it something of a problem when the secondary characters are the best thing about the show? By their very nature, they're on screen less.

I still like Community more than nearly anything else on TV, but it struggles when compared to say, 30 Rock, where you don't just have great secondary characters, but characters like Liz and Jack, who Brita and Jeff can't compare to.

Title: Re: Community
Post by: Хahar 🤔 on February 18, 2011, 01:56:01 AM
Jeff and Britta aren't on camera nearly as much as Liz and Jack, though. They don't get a ton of screentime in today's episode.

If you liked season two, then season one ought to blow you away.

The episode today was one of a few this year where the shift in tone between the two seasons was a good thing. An episode like that wouldn't have been possible a year ago.

The season finale next week is going to be nuts.

What I don't get is why it doesn't pull better numbers.  I know it's up against another great show in Big Bang Theory (which crushes it in the ratings...we're talking 3:1 here), and one that is aiming at a very similar demographic.  It (Community) has been renewed for another season and CBS seems to like to move BBT around every season so maybe it won't be up against it next year.  I think Community is a much better show, but I understand it's not everybodies cup of tea.

Excellent show. It expands what should be a generic premise into a great production with top notch casting and out of the box writing. Last night's return to paintball modeled on a spaghetti western was one of the smartest episodes on TV this season, in or out of the sitcom genre.

I suppose nothing is guaranteed, but the link above (and another stating that Joel Hodgman will be guest starring at some point) seem to indicate that it is at least coming back.

It wasn't doing great in the ratings, but it's on NBC.  AND it was up against the Big Bang Theory, which was the first scripted television show to ever beat American Idol head to head a few weeks ago.  It's (Community) probably not all that expensive to make.  It's not good that it left this winter, but I don't think it's fate is sealed just yet.

Without the CBS comedies at 8pm, NBC got a big boost. The post-hiatus return of Community drew a season high 2.2 adults 18-49, up 46% vs. a 1.5 rating in its last new episode in early December. Community was the #1 show of the night among adults 18-34. 30 Rock had a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating, also a season high, up 43% vs. a 1.4 rating at 8pm last week.

At some point, almost certainly. Chris Pratt is in it, too, and I like him almost as much as her; having both in the same movie is too great to pass up, even if they're not the main characters. Chris Parnell is also in it, and he's great on 30 Rock and Archer.

Yeah, that one was good.  Then they went into an "Abed really is crazy" swing that kind of disturbed me.  I like Abed quirky and weird not in dire need of a serious mental health evaluation.

Title: Re: Community
Post by: Хahar 🤔 on May 01, 2012, 11:09:05 PM
I feel the same way; I've really hated the way Abed's character has been infantilized over the course of the season (the tag of the Dreamatorium episode sticks out in particular as something repulsive). It seems like that's very much a minority opinion on the Internet, though.

Title: Re: Community
Post by: fezzyfestoon on May 01, 2012, 11:39:54 PM
Apparently this season has been set aside as a chance to challenge the characters' relationships and whatnot. It's supposed to be darker while next season is meant to be everything in harmony and just fun. That being said, I agree that Abed being turned into something ridiculous and possibly the most flawed character is terrible. He has definitely been diminished into a novelty of quirkiness rather than a guiding force of genuineness and objectivity that kind of made all the other characters and their flaws work.

Troy-it's ten after 8
Abed (to Annie and Shirley)-I'm gifted in other ways

For Dr Who fans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BtEW3dAAF7M)

Pretty good ending to the season.  I reallyl liked the video game episode.  Lots of good jokes.

I hated the last episode; it felt like bad fanfiction. Abed trying to cut Jeff's arm off with a saw isn't funny or cute; it means he's dangerously insane and needs to be institutionalized for the sake of those around him.

In other news, Dan Harmon's no longer running the show.

Community premier delayed (http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/community-whitney-premieres-delayed-by-nbc)
Quote
Good news, "Community" fans: your show may not have to air on Fridays, after all.

Bad news, "Community" fans: your show won't be returning 11 days from now.

NBC has decided to hold the October 19 premieres of both "Community" and "Whitney." I'm told the goal is to give both of them more proper support, but it's unclear if that means keeping them on Fridays but delaying them long enough to do a better marketing campaign, or if one or both of the shows will be sent in to replace a sitcom that's struggling earlier in the week (like, for instance, "Up All Night").

<snip>

“Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 – we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold COMMUNITY and WHITNEY from their previously announced premieres of October 19th.  Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week -- plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights.  When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks,  we will announce new season premieres of WHITNEY and COMMUNITY. “

That episode felt like Childrens Hospital somehow became an episode of Community. It was totally bizarre and I loved it. I'm on board.

It was alright, I was hoping for a bit more to be honest.  Still, a bad episode of Community is still better than EVERYTHING ELSE ON TV!

(ok, that's not true)

5th Season! (http://variety.com/2013/tv/news/community-renewed-nbc-parks-and-rec-amy-poehler-1200478598/)

again, with just 13 episodes...but still, I think most people assumed it was done.

So it was canceled by NBC.....again.....sad face
and then Dan Harmon said he didn't even want to think about bringing the show back from the brink again
then he said he did
then Hulu said they might pick it up
then they didn't
.....
NOW IT'S BACK AGAIN!...13 episodes on whatever the hell Yahoo! Screen is.  But I don't care, just happy that there will be 6 seasons and a movie!

First two episodes are up on Yahoo! Screen....if you can get it to work.  Both of our smart TVs have the app, but we can't find it on there.  Tried watching on the smart phone, but it was buggy/laggy.  Finally watched them on a PC and it was fine.  If you live outside the US, you'll have to find a work around (of which there are several).

Apart from the crappy service, the episodes were ok.  Certainly not the best thing ever, but it's good to see (most) of Study Group back together again.

I found it very easily on my apple tv, also rewatched it on the free ipad app. I checked the website on my desktop and it was easy to find and watch the episodes on there too.

I feel, like the first two episodes of season 5, that it's necessary to watch the episodes a few times to adjust to the new version of the show. It's still the same smart show and I think this season will get better now that they've found their legs in the first two. The Dean's physicality in that virtual reality episode was truly hilarious.
