Well, I want to say two things.

First of all, why not?

Second of all, it would be better for our federal government budget to stop constant name changes of the executive building by each new Secretary. I mean, come on, people, think about all the money wasted by changing all the papers, charts, signs, informations etc. etc.

I'm worried about supporting this because there's no building or memorial garden named after me. I'll mull this over.

I assume this means you'll also support HappyWarriors bill to rename those airports after Atlasians?

I think we shouldn't name the DoEA after someone who will, inevitably, return to run that Department.  Name it after a departed Atlasian, like Colin.

I don't see what's the big deal with that. Using that standard, we'd also have to pick out a different Atlasian for RG and SoFE.

Cabinet officials getting to name their buildings during their tenure is a long tradition I am reluctant to end.

Well, my intention was to provide names after either departed or inactive Atlasians indeed.

AndrewCT was in office for short time, but now, he's with angels. PS departed and few can deny how great GM he was. Peter departed, I guess, as well and was longtime AG. Fritz is in game, but not as active politician, and he buildt the entire RG institution, so deserved this honor. Both Gustaf and Jedi sucks, so Joe Arpaio is still better :P. Teddy returned, but he was outstanding SoFE.

Ok, if we're talking about DoEA HQ name, I can change to Colin or some other departed figure experienced on foreign affairs field.

Cabinet officials getting to name their buildings during their tenure is a long tradition I am reluctant to end.

Argh, they have too much power already...

Agreed. And also, like Bgwah said, we'd be taking away a longtime tradition of Secretary's naming their own buildings.

A hate these.

Senators have 72 hours to assume sponsorship. Tabling it is quicker, if the Senators get off their asses and vote quickly, which isn't guarranteed.

Yes, I know how all the Rowans of the Senate will react : "OMG you're delaying the Senate's work for some useless bill while there is so much srs bsness to do !". Well, this time I'll be on the wrong side. :P

I am concerned that it would be confusing especially to new citizens to have buildings named after active Atlasians who are not heading those departments.

Title: Re: SENATE BILL: Honoring Some Folks Act (Debating)
Post by: Antonio the Sixth on April 20, 2011, 03:13:09 AM

Don't see how this could be amended. :P I think we can call a final vote and see how it ends up.

To those who hesitate, I have a couple of things to say. The purpose of this bill is to recognize the work of people who, to the general opinion, have served Atlasia with dedication. I think one of the reasons why so few people really do productive things is lack of reward for the merits of everyone. Well, even if symbolical, this is a reward for people who deserved it. I could add that those people should serve as examples for their successors, that we must encourage them to be worthy of what those people did. So yeah, of course there is a point in letting officeholders choose the names of their offices, but isn't it better if we make it clear we want more people like the "folks" this bill is honoring ?

While I think this bill has great intentions, I'm hesitant to sign this. One of the great perks of getting a cabinet position is getting to name your own building, and we've certainly seen some creative and funny names over the years.

Is that worth a veto ? I don't think the President should veto any single bill he isn't fond of, just those he honestly thinks he has the moral duty to prevent from passing because he feel they are a danger for the country.

Not necessarily saying I'd veto it, I'm still not sure. I just don't think this bill is very beneficial, and I think both Shua and Bgwah have raised very strong points on why this should not be passed.

This bill has enough votes to fail. Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.

Final votes last for seven (or is it five) days, or until a majority has voted one way or the other.

If i recall, that bill was in the senate for a week... and there wasn't any legislation waiting in the queue.

Right now we have a bunch of bills up for consideration that have been taking up slots for weeks or even months all while the queue loads up to unmanageable levels.  Furthermore, many of these bills are completely unnecessary when you consider how they're impeding any real progress in getting things done.

I also find it a little funny (in the komisch, not lustig sense) that Antonio tried to catch me with this zinger, considering it is his social security bill that has been taking up a slot for 3 months now.  The whole thing probably should be rewritten and resubmitted in whole, if not in pieces, in order to pass it in a timely manner... but there it sits.

At this pace, my education bill won't come up until it's too late for local school districts to set their budgets for next year, which would likely lead to the lay off of thousands of teachers even while enrollment grows nationwide.  On top of that, there is no reason to tell these teachers they don't have a job only to come back at the last second and say "JUST KIDDING!  See ya next year!".

So yeah, I'm a little frustrated.  And apparently many of my colleagues agreed with me that this bill was frivolous.

Snowman, you should have PMed me. If it was that much of a priority I could have sent it through the PPT slot, since obviously no one is going to offer any more stuff on Libya. Do you want me to do that? I kept it free just for these sorts of emergency's.

Title: Re: SENATE BILL: Honoring Some Folks Act (Failed)
Post by: Ban my account ffs! on April 28, 2011, 01:33:40 AM
well.. my bill isn't an emergency.  I just find it ridiculous that it is taking this long to get legislation passed.. the best thing you could do is call a vote on legislation that is dormant for more than a couple days.  If it's not important enough to bring about debate.. it's time to vote it in or out.

But thanks for trying to work it out.  It'd probably be better to save the PPT slot for something more pressing as long we can get my bill done within a few weeks.

This was not "important" matter indeed, Snowguy, but the problem is more that work on any bill is taking too long.

When I were in Northeast Assembly, we were doing the crap in three days, usually.

I would strongly suggest some of you dummies read the Senate discusssion thread, the one that currently has Rowan admitting that the didn't know it existed, as its last post. On the previous page, I addressed that very issue with the hope of seeking solutions to go with the one I posted. Then of course, none of you people read it. I guess its suppose to be my diary then. :P
