Name five Democrats who you think would make good nominees/Presidents for 2008:
(in no particular order)

Phil Bredensen
Mark Warner

Didn't realize we had to list five so on top of those I have already listed, I would say...

Ben Nelson (Yes, some people have suggested he might run) and Brad Henry.

I'd love to see Biden run...again(?)

How old will be be in 2008? I think he'd make a great President.

If this refers to ones who have a chance of winning:
Clinton
Bayh
Richardson
Warner
Obama

If this refers to ones I would like to see:
Warner
Zell Miller
Ben Nelson
Dave Freudenthal (WY governor)
Anyone who can defeat Hillary in the primary

Agreed

Hmm... I'd like to see a candidate who can appeal to rural and small town voters.

None of the moderates have a chance.

A lot of people want to be President though, so you can always count on a fair number testing the waters at least.

Why? and can I have better argument than "the democratic party is dominated by liberals who don't care about winning"...

Warner would have a very good chance at the nomination but I think he's more interested in running for the senate.

Bayh has an excellent chance as does Vilsack, if he had another name I say that Vilsack had nearly as a good a shot as Evan Bayh but his name (stupid though it should seem) will scupper his hopes IMHO.

Mark Warner

Evan Bayh

Russ Feingold

Ed Rendell

Hillary Clinton

Howard Dean

Mary Landrieu

Bill Nelson

...all these will be mentioned but i expect the field to be surprisingly small in terms of actual candidates, i doubt Nelson, Warner or Landrieu will run and i think if she does run Clinton will do badly and Evan Bayh will win, that’s not to dismiss her completely but that what i would anticipate happening.

I like your list, except Harold Ford couldn't win a general presidential election in the US - he's black.  Well, maybe if we're in the middle of a depression or something, it could happen.

Wake up - John Edwards has no shot! He's got no experiance in an executive position, and is way too liberal to win. You need to move closer to the center, and nominate a fresh face.

But that's only if you want to win.

I have two problems with Bayh, and they were some of the major problems that hurt Kerry. Firstly, Bayh isn't much of a senate leader. He doesn't have any major legislative acheivments. Secondly he is kind of dry. The Democrats need a candidate who can maximize those two traits.

Evan Bayh
Mark Warner

and the fifth, don't know: Hillary Clinton, Rod Blagojevich, Kathleen Sebelius.

For those who mention that Bayh has the disadvantage of being a Senator, he was also a strong two term governor (Kerry wasn't).

Dick Gephardt
John Edwards
Mary Landrieu
Jennifer Granholm (if only the arnold amendment passed...)
and, yeah, I'll go with Feingold

I also like Chris Bell from Texas, and I really do think he could take the state.  (I know, it's such a drastic statement, but I'll stick with it.)  I also like Steny Hoyer, the house minority whip from MD.  And Louisiana's own Chris John.  Anybody but Bayh!!!!!!  PLEASE!!!

Oh and I like the Dean for DNC chair signature!  ;)

Gephardt is gone.

John Edwards will be doing squat for four years and would have found it difficult in 2004 and would find it impossible after four years of doing nothing.

Mary Landrieu, maybe but I don't think she wants it and some would argue she was lacking gravitas, Blanche Lincoln would be a better choice, if you where looking ofr a southern female candidate.

Feingold is a guy I respect a great deal, but he is very liberal and would get battered by any credible GOP nominee, that said he wouldn't be as bad as Dean as he is far more disciplined.

Bayh however is by far the best choice, his positions, his geographical location and his experience all fit perfectly... my only worry is he is slightly wooden but then again Kerry was far more staid and Bayh is far more folksy something Kerry could never be, added to which Bayh doesn't do things to look stupid like windsurfing or cycling in likera... he is the Dems best bet by far, he’s the only Democrat who would be the candidate the republican nominee would have to beat rather than vice versa… no other democrat can offer that.

I think Bayh would be a strong Democratic candidate in "red" states. He seems to be in touch with "Main Street" values

He'd  get a larger piece of the moderate vote than Kerry, as well as greater support among Republicans and conservatives; while being centrist enough not to turn off liberals

He may need to raise his game in the Senate; though he does have a proven executive record as a two-term governor of Indiana - a job he would still hold if not for term limits

I hate to break it to you all again but Bayh is a serious and unaccomplished Senator.

Taking a lesson from 2004. We need a nominee who has acomplished something in their political career.

Bill Richarson

In no particular order.  Bayh or Feingold would help secure more Mid-western votes.  Although Feingold is a liberal, he could play the "return to civil liberties" card, since he was only senator to vote against it.  John Edwards may have beaten Bush if the Dems nominated him, rather than Kerry.  He's more charismatic than Kerry, he has a folksy appeal about him.  Also he and Harold Ford are from the south and thus more likely to get some votes there.  By now the Democrats should at least figure they need a moderate candidate to win.  No chance for Hillary, or Gore, or Kerry.  Dean would have a chance, if he wasn't known for the scream.  Some reason the media took a bit of excitement and blew it way out of proportion.

Bayh was a pretty accomplished, and popular,  two term governor of Indiana. He saw Indiana through recession, without hiking taxes and balancing the budget

I've been thinking about it... and Bayh could be a very good pick. And for one reason:

To win back the White House, the Democrats need someone who can connect with Small Town voters (Bubba Clinton was very good at that. Neither Gore nor Kerry were any good at it and it cost them the top job) and Bayh's powerbase in Indiana is Small Town voters.

And I have to admit that I'm biased towards people from coalfields ;-)
