Title: Teddy's Diplomacy Thread 01
Post by: Teddy (IDS Legislator) on May 07, 2011, 09:35:30 PM

Note, the province who's name is hidden by the order box is NAF, though, I am a very accepting GM. So long as it's clear what you mean, I will accept the order. If you were to, for example, refer to this area as Algeria, I'll accept the order. If however you called it Algania, I may not, as it could be confused with Albania, etc.

Note that I've edited the map. And when I say edit the map, I don't mean that I've edited the image. I actually edited the map data in realpolitik. It's not that hard, the program is designed to be customisable.

Nametags and Units should no longer be hidden, or, hide centre dots.

I've also hosted the map on my website so that anyone with difficulty accessing photobucket wont have a problem.

Probably a good idea, since I've already forgotten, to state when the moves are due...when are they due?

Order Example Syntax, using the most common opening move in the game.

A Con-Bul
CON BUL
Army Constantinople to Bulgaria
A moves Constantinople to Bulgaria
Con Moves Bulgaria
Army Con-->Bul

I use A CON-BUL personally, but any of the above is acceptable.

I usually go with "Army Constantinople MOVES Bulgaria"

I hope that's fine. :P

Probably. ;)

I mean, in what way or universe would they not be acceptable?

Now we're asking obvious questions, how do I write a support-command?

Title: Re: Teddy's Diplomacy Thread 01
Post by: Teddy (IDS Legislator) on May 09, 2011, 06:30:02 PM
"s" or "Supports"

F Bla S A Con-Bul
Army Greece Supports Constantinople to Bulgaria

Convoy orders must include the full path.

Fleet Aeg Convoys Army Con-Gre
Army Con-Aeg-Gre

Title: Re: Teddy's Diplomacy Thread 01

So, "Army Smyrna-Greece (convoyed)" is not acceptable? Or only acceptable if it's theoretically impossible to convoy any other way?

Pre-orders are good. I'll generally hope that I get them from all players before I leave work on Thursday mornings (2 hours from now)

I've sent out PM's to those that I don't have orders from yet to subtly remind them of the deadline.

FYI, I am liable to find myself with no/intermittant net access for the next 10 days or so. Hopefully I'll be able to check in evry couple of days and put in orders, etc.

There is still one player I don't have orders from and the deadline is under 24 hours away. If no orders are received, should we NMR?

I've included "GM's Comments on Popularity" since it's taboo for me to comment on strategy, I thought I could at least comment on how often I've seen a set of moves happen

Turkey - Crimean Crusher
I've only been witness to a few games where this has been tried, one of them while I was Turkey, and never one where the move to BLA has worked.

Russia - Ukraine System, Austrian Attack Variant
Not rare but not common either. I've used this myself in the past.

Italy - Tyrolia Attack
I've seen this opening quite often. I've used this myself in the past.

Germany - Anschluss, Munich Variant
I've never seen this exact move before, though I've seen the armies move this way and F to HOL. I've never used this exact move, but I have sent MUN to TYL before.

France - Atlantic Opening, Burgundy Variant
Fairly common, I've used it myself in the past.

England - Northern Opening, Churchill Variant
This is the most common opening I've witnessed for England, I've used this myself in the past.

Austrian - Roadhog
This is a fairly standard opening. I've used it myself in the past.

Commanding opening for Turkey. I've never actually seen Turkey mount an early offensive against Russia. I could actually editorialize on all of the openings, but I think the players would benefit from working out the consequences of this turn on their own. ;)

Wait until the deadline and then, if no orders, proceed as I suggest in the House Rules thread.

And yes, I will have my orders in before the deadline.

Oops, sorry, got distracted by another Internet game >.<

I'll be spending the weekend catching up all over the rest of the Internet.

Build phases will normally not be anywhere near this long. However due to my error here this phase will be standard length.

If anyone has any concerns, even if you've PMed me about them in the past few days, PM me again. I wont be upset with double PM's, as it'll help me remember what I need to do to "catch up"

I like to shadow the game with my copy of jDip. I would be grateful if you would echo orders as well as post the maps.

For instance, there have been units that did not move. I like to know if they were ordered to hold, given an invalid order, or were left without any order. That gives me a sense of the thinking and strategy of the players. For cases with invalid orders it also offers a teaching moment for players and spectators alike.

Convoy orders must include the full path.

Fleet Aeg Convoys Army Con-Gre
Army Con-Aeg-Gre

This is actually contrary to the official rules. The rules explicitly allow for ambiguous convoy paths.

Quote
An Army convoyed using alternate convoy orders reaches its destination as long as at least one convoy route remains open. Orders can be written to permit more than one route for convoying an Army from its origin to its destination. The Army is not prevented from moving unless all routes in the order are disrupted. (p. 15)

I have heard no opposition, and my offer still stands. I presume that orders had been sent in already, so if all would copy those orders to me, I'll post the turn and continue the game. If I don't hear from some of the players I'll reach out to get the game going again.

Both Austria and Germany have notified me that time constraints will keep them from playing. If there are two players that want to take over those countries we can continue from here. Also, since the game is only into the first year, and I have volunteered, I would entertain a fresh start. Please post with your thoughts.

I'm posing some things here as I'm deleting a few threads

I'm curious if someone would like to play a variant of diplomacy. There a few in mind I think would work.

GUNBOAT - In this variant, diplomacy is not allowed. This creates a tactical game, and, requires you to communicate using your moves. In order for this variant to work, your identity would have to be secret, and, since no gabbing is allowed, the game moves much quicker, with 2 deadlines a week. This is a "press variant" and can be played on any map.

1898 - This map uses the standard map, but, you start with only one unit. There are two subvariants. Standard means that your 3 national dots (your national centres) are the only ones you can build on, regarldess of which dots you take over prior to the year 1900. The second variant says that whatever dots you take over by the year 1900 (IE the first two years) become your national dots, and you can thus build at them and only them.
http://www.dipwiki.com/images/0/04/1898.gif
()

Aberration - This map is, in short, a standard map, with some changes. The nations are Eire (Ireland), Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Byzantium (Greece), Burgundy, Sicily, and Israel. All other standard rules apply.
()

Ancient (Mediterranean) - This is a 5 player variant (good for faster games, also good for gunboat) in the ancient world. Players are Rome, Carthage, Greece, Egypt, and Syria. I've played this variant, and I consider it one of my favs.
()

Hundred - 3 player variant, also good for fast and gunboat games. Also recommended. I've played this before, when you are up against equals, a game of Hundred can take a long, long time. The game I played saw the alliances shift every single year. Eventually we all settled on a draw that I proposed :P
()

Imperium - This has always been a curiosity of mine. I've never actually seen it played. There are no home dots, so you can build from any of your dots that are free. There are also special rules about the river etc. I can go into more detail if anyone is interested in playing this variant.
()

Modern - Another recommended variant. Considering it needs more players, I doubt it'd get off the ground.
()

Youngstown - Identical explanation to "Modern"
()

Versailles - Now THIS has to be my single most fav variant. Not only does a player get a "major" nation, but also a randomly assigned "minor" nation as well. We could spice things up if we invite players to also play the minor nations!
