Title: H. E. A. R. T. - Tracking the December 2011 Senate Election
Post by: homelycooking on June 27, 2011, 12:45:17 PM
Welcome to the offices of HEART - the Homely Election Analytics Research Team!

I'll soon post some analysis of the shift in the vote from February and June.
Taking requests.
IF YOU HAVE EVER HELD AN OFFICE IN ATLASIA, please let me know what office(s) you held, the duration of time that you held it, the states you resided in and the parties you belonged to. I'm setting up an authoritative archive of Atlasian politics. I can do most of this myself, but I'd appreciate it if you could make my job a little easier.

You might want to alter the name as on the main page, the forum...shortens it up in an unfortunate manner.

ummm Because the JCP felt the need to run a candidate against me?
You guys keep saying you want to cooperate with the UDL but that only seems to apply when you get all of the benefits.

You guys keep saying you want to cooperate with the UDL but that only seems to apply when you get all of the benefits.

I was not aware you were entitled to our votes.

Furthermore, I for one never received a PM from you or anyone in the UDL about JCP support, or even my personal support. Interestingly enough, Jbrase did send me a PM, and I wouldn't be surprised if many others on the "left" also received a PM from him. If you're wondering why he's getting certain votes, I would speculate it is because he is actively campaigning for them. Asking for someone's vote can go a long way, you know. Cooperation generally involves a bit of communication. And it shouldn't be terribly shocking that the JCP ran a candidate for a vacancy caused by the resignation of a JCP Senator.

You seem to harbor a lot of unjustified resentment, and I'm sorry to see that. I assure you and anyone else in your party that if you seek "cooperation," just drop me a PM and I will be happy to talk. I had thought the JCP-UDL relationship had improved quite a bit, but perhaps I was mistaken. Perhaps we can work together to improve this in the future.

Never said i was entitled to anything, interesting how you think your entitled to the seat just because one of yours left it though, and you guys must have the problem or you wouldn't have  gone through the effort to throw the election to the Jbrase just to make sure i don't get it.

That is not what I said, and in fact I specifically made sure I worded my sentence to make sure it would not be conveyed as such, but perhaps I overestimated your reading comprehension. I merely said it should not be surprising that we ran a candidate for a seat we previously held. Furthermore, it has long been our policy to run candidates for as many offices as possible.

Keep in mind I haven't voted yet, and while I intend to write-in Meeker as my first preference, I have become uncertain as to my second preference. If I vote for you and you win, are you going to be as petty, paranoid, and rude as you are currently being? Interesting how i always get far more love from the right than the left.

And you didn't even preference the JCP candidate. What's your point?
ummm Because the JCP felt the need to run a candidate against me?
You guys keep saying you want to cooperate with the UDL but that only seems to apply when you get all of the benefits.

I encouraged Bgwah to try to find a candidate to run under the JCP moniker because there was absolutely no communication from the UDL asking for our endorsement or vote.

The UDL is not entitled to any JCP votes, just as we are not entitled to yours.

But that doesn't matter.  You, Texasgurl, along with several others in the UDL, simply hate Bgwah and the JCP.  It doesn't matter what kind of cooperation there is... you'll never step beyond this personal distaste.  I 2nd preferenced you because I like you and your political stances are generally in line with my own.  But honestly, you're not around very often and I still get this feeling that, if elected, you won't take the senate job seriously at all.  Sure, the game is for fun... but in order for a game to be fun, you have to follow the rules and be committed.  I don't doubt you can do that, but you've said yourself that you think things are too serious.

It seems to me that most of the people that admittedly wanted cooperation with the JCP have since given up on the UDL, so most people left are those who would never cooperate with us anyway (Xahar, ilikeverin, you to name a few).  Xahar has made it clear that he wants the UDL to supplant the JCP and views working with the JCP very negatively.  With that kind of attitude, it makes me hesitant to support UDL candidates.

I hope you prove me wrong.  I think you'd make a fine addition to the senate... and I would gladly have worked to get you more JCP votes... but we need communication.  If there is no communication, you should assume we're going to field our own candidate and throw our support behind that person.  I don't think that's an unfair or uncooperative thing to do.

There's nothing wrong about the JCP running a candidate on its own. What I don't get is JCPers preferencing a libertarian like Jbrase above someone who perfectly fits their views, like TexasGurl.

This is not a "communication" issue. This is simply consistency in voting : if you are a left-winger, you know you have no reason to prefer Jbrase to TG.

TG's behavior in this thread makes me happy I preferenced Jbrase over her.

Also, giving the fact how many UDL-ers, including the candidate herself, did not preference Meeker at all, please spare me from this hypocrisy.

The point it's that currently, only Meeker's transfers matter. And it's the attitude of some of Meeker's voters (like you) which is causing the left's defeat. I'd be equally pissed of at the UDLers if their votes caused Jbrase's victory.

Can I just interject to note yet again how sad and unnecessary the JCP/UDL split is? :'( Not one damned ounce of ideological distinction as far as I can see; just personality conflicts.

Its a shame, and spats like this fortell it not resolving anytime soon.

We could do far worse than JBrase in the Senate, and considering how little the Atlasian left has allowed to split itself over, we should be thankful.

Interesting, if JCPers had all their votes transfer straight to TG instead of exhausting/going to JBrase, TexasGurl would have won this. Unless I'm just reading this wrong.

Indeed. That's the sad thing of this election (for the left, of course :P).

With apparently no possibility for two left-wing parties cooperation, due to some people (on both sides) personal obsessions, I'm glad Jbrase won. Although there are a lot of political disagreements between us, I'm sure he'll be a dedicated Senator, as I already know he can work above of party/ideological lines. I fail to see any TG's ability to get along with the people outside her narrow circle.

Since my candidate didn't win, I'm glad to see Atlasian Ron Paul beating Atlasian Sarah Palin.

This whole episode reminds me of whenever the the AASP and the Populares were going at war with each other.  I wanted to put personal animosities behind us and work towards a common objective but the Populares Party seemed hell bent on preventing me from doing so.  It was either their way or the highway.  As much as it sucks for me to say but, it was their way.
There is no way in hell two left parties are ever going to fully cooperate, just like there was no way in hell two libertarian parties were ever going to fully cooperate.  There can only be one left dog in the yard, much like there could be only one libertarian dog in the yard.  It was only by putting my personal issues with people like Libertas aside that I was able to help the libertarian movement advance, even if it meant giving up on the Atlasian Anti-Square Party.
I know it sucks, but one of your groups is going to have to kick the can if you want to see left wing domination succeed.  Two leftist parties breed more animosity towards each other than they would with a right wing party.  It's only natural because by default you guys are stealing each other's votes.  It sucks, I know it sucks that one group may hate the other so much that it ends up endorsing different ideological candidates, but that is the nature of the beast.
It's hard to be unified if the Left is split up into numerous parties, much like it was for the libertarian/right to be split up into three different parties.  Just take it from me: work out your differences and the group more prone to compromise should just give in.
If that proves too hard for either group to do remember one thing: IT'S JUST A F***ING GAME, alright?  And in games the point is to win.  Sometimes to win you got to ally with assholes and sometimes you have to let those assholes win so that in the end you can win as well.

Damn, this speech just really sucks.  Then again I guess it really touches on why there has never been any real right wing domination for the past few years (y'know due to the whole RPP, PCP, POP, AASP, John Engle Party, blahblahblahblahblah).

Exhausted - 4 (Eraserhead, Meeker, DrScholl, jfern)

This is what I have so far.

An interesting note, due to the way ties are broken, Jbrase would have won on the 2nd ballot if he had 1 more vote, as by finishing ahead on the first ballot, he breaks any ties for himself.

Of course. Thanks to your incredible abilities you can read our minds.

Various thoughts:

It's worth noting that Meeker is one of those JCP members (albeit simply a JCP-enabler for a long time) who get shuffled around form office to office without regard to competence. He was a bad PPT, a do-nothing Vice President, and a do-nothing Governor.
Nobody does nothing better than Meeker.
Has Meeker ever done anything in Atlasia?

Clearly the JCP values naught but competence and good government.

"I'm leaving Atlasia"

"*why no one cares about me?*"

Nobody is eliminated as long as there is a surplus to be distributed, since the distribution of the surplus can change the order of eliminations

But keep on doing the same thing over and over again, Atlasia.

There were five candidates on the ballot. Participation in Atlasia is embarrassingly low. We've decided positions like GTO Ambassador and Deputy SoFE are more important.

GTO Ambassador is quite pointless & should never have been a playable position. Deputy SoFE is hardly ever even filled, though. Hard to lay blame on an optional office that is empty for the most part.

Regardless of my political affiliation I think it's fair to say that it is unfortunate that the three candidates who are currently at the bottom of the table are two active sitting senators and a long-serving, respectable member of cabinet.

I am glad you agree that the inability to field more than five candidates on a ballot for a five seat election might have something to do with low turnout. People don't find value in voting when election results are a foregone conclusion. Creating a larger pool of candidates would create a larger pool of voters.

Rather than whine, perhaps you could show up to vote yourself.

It is always sad when good people lose but that is why we have elections.

It is conversely fortunate that two active sitting Senators, a former Senator and a great Speaker take the 4 top spots.

Personal drama drives people away from this game more than anything, and that has nothing to do with the election system or whatever. And there has been a lot of drama over the past year.

I also suspect Atlasia operates in cycles. Previous peaks have been in 04/05 and 08/09, some stagnation in 06/10, with noticeable declines around 07/11. Obviously this is reflective of the fact that we are hosted on a website about U.S. presidential elections. I'm sure Atlasia will become very active again next year and into 2013 with the inevitable surge of new members that will come.

To be honest I haven't been very good about recruitment lately. I know certain people dislike my recruiting, but considering my recruits include Hans, Antonio, Homelycooking, and so many more active members I can't even remember them all, it's probably an important factor in keeping Atlasia active. With Hamilton and Dallasfan mostly out of the picture now, we don't really have anyone working on keeping that segment of Atlasia alive. The RPP is only running one candidate here, and didn't seem to be running a strong ticket for Prez in June, so they haven't really had a reason to get their machine working, for the most part, so I'm not really sure what state it's in.

You're out of touch with Atlasaia and gave a poor debate performance. That might be why BRTD is ahead of you.

How can you even consider BRTD a "former Senator" at this point as if he's done anything of consequence? I don't think he's done anything in years. Meanwhile, Jbrase and Shua are struggling for the fifth seat even though Shua has been one of the most active in the Senate and Jbrase has showed a real interest in legislating and fighting for his reform proposal(s). We have a real perverse reward system for officeholders in this game right now, and it's all because of the Numbers Game.

For someone so concerned about TURNOUT and REGIONS, you really lead by example by voting in Northeastern elections.

Activity when used as a voting criteria is meaningless if it is active opposition. I'm not going to vote for people who oppose my bills just because they are "active" when doing so. Both sides need to uphold activity but to say BRTD will be less active than your party's Mideast Senator is a joke.

Now that is even funnier than the earlier crap you posted.  I'm not out of touch with Atlasia; I'm not in the JCP, and therefore screwed.  I don't know how you measure debate performance, but I certainly did not give a "poor" one.  And BRTD is ahead of me only because all of your JCP minions turned out to vote, not actually paying attention, but only looking at affiliation.

Your debate answers were noticeably vague compared to the other candidates and your stances were out of touch with the electorate. You also failed to ask for our endorsement as others in your party did. Keep your bitterness to yourself.

My plan was to leave the Northeast pretty soon. The regional elections weren't the first thing on my mind.

Here's the difference between you and me, since so many people like the make the comparison since we're both such firebrands: I'm honest. I'm not going to twist myself into a pretzel to serve as a hack. You're totally right, Officepark hasn't been active. I'm also not the person that can do anything about that since this is an at-large election and I'm not a Mideast citizen. But I'll hardly stand here and defend his record.

You, however, just can't let any chance go to be aggressive and to play the party line. Hell, even when I served as resident JCP hack in 2009 I could still admit there were problems with the JCP and reach out to the reformist left. I don't see that same ability in you. There's no room for nuance in Atlasia in that mind of yours. The whole BRTD saga is a joke, and he was cooked up, I'm sure, as a last minute JCP candidate because, despite the huge size of your party, you can't ever seem to find people to run for office. Be honest with us for once in your career, Napoleon. BRTD has done nothing to deserve his current position in the results except be a JCP member.

Marokai Blue's RPP cronies threatened and blackmailed Jake Matthews, a very active newbie, if he did not vote for Marokai or invalidate his vote. He has subsequently left Atlasia permanently. And I know of another Northeasterner who has permanently left due to the NE Senate race drama.

And yet Marokai Blue thinks its the system that is stale and causing activity in Atlasia to suffer... Sorry, but that just isn't the case.

Who, exactly? So many former Northeasterners are no longer active in Atlasian politics, and I can certainly imagine why. Perhaps you're talking about Bullmoose, who refused to vote because he had two choices; to vote for his friend and suffer the wrath of his party or vote for the party and turn his back on his friend? Yeah, I feel so inclined to your side of the argument here, the party that has singlehandedly turned every election into a gigantic numbers game that, more than anything has dissuaded people from running for office.

Seriously, you don't think that could possible have anything to do with it? The fact that running for office has essentially become a business, there's no point in running for anything anything unless you're a glutton for punishment or you have the election in the bag from the get-go.

Your argument is hardly reasonable. "We had to run someone else because the election would've been boring otherwise!" Perhaps if the JCP loosened it's grip just a little on the throat of the at-large elections, more people would be inclined to run.

(Also you don't need to name me as if I'm not here. You can talk to me directly.)

Marokai if you want to call me a liar try finding a lie first. I've been clear about where I stand. I don't whine about turnout and yet not show up to vote and then make up bullsh**t excuses.

As usual, you dodge and spin, dodge and spin. I didn't try defending Officepark. You however can't help yourself by defend anything with a JCP stamp. Now you've conveniently moved on from that issue entirely.

Numerous JCP members have voted for other candidates over our own over the years. They have never faced the "wrath of the party," I don't even know what that would be.

Loosen our grip? Even when we were only running one candidate, there weren't many other people running, only 5 for 5 seats... So whatever. Even Homely wanted us to run a second candidate. :P

(I'm pretty sure I don't though. Looks like I just barely fall below Jbrase in the count, and then give him almost all my vote and he gets the quota in the last round.)

It looks to me from estimating: Ben is ahead of both me and Jbrase in the second count. It's only when I get eliminated that Jbrase surges ahead of homely and Ben and meets quota.  The last spot is then between homely and Ben, which homely wins due to the many surplus second preferences.

If we have 74 vote, the quota is 13.

74/6=12.333 and it always gets rounded up so that gives 13.

Yelnoc is winning a huge majority of the conditional second preferences. If he can manage to not come in third in terms of first preferences, he can win the election rather handily. But this will be a tough task for him, since the Silly voting base is so small.

Even though Nathan leads the first count, it is much more difficult for him to be elected than it is for the other two candidates. Nathan, who is running at around 37% of the first-preference vote, needs either to get to around 46-7% or to win several more Cincinnatus second-preferences to become elected. But the electoral calculus will change dramatically if Cincinnatus pulls ahead of Yelnoc. The race could go down to the wire if that happens, since Yelnoc's second preferences are breaking 9-5 toward Cincinnatus, who trails Nathan by only one vote more than that margin.

I feel bad for not expressing a second preference now - it wasn't a conscious decision to snub Nathan.

Haven't been around this weekend, but am truely floored at the results currently. There's still plenty of time for things to change.

The Atlasian Sentinel is projecting that a citizen of the Northeast region will be elected to the Senate.

There is a mistake: the RPP number should read 9 (Rowan Brandon and Clarence). Including those two, I count 32 RPP members voting.

Those not yet voting are: afleitch, Ben Kenobi, elyski, Hotblack Desiato, Keystone Phil, Teddy, officepark, Smid and tb75. I am counting Teddy as an RPP member since he was one when the election started.

I count 34 JCP members voting.

Those not yet voting are: Alcon, bgwah, Boris, Change08, GMantis, Hans, Gporter, Holmes, HST1948, Leftbehind, Obama12, Odysseus, px75 and phknrocket.

I agree July 2008-June 2009 were may favorite period of this game. Elections were interesting, yes, but so was life outside of these elections. We had active news publications, debates and all kinds of goings on.

But it looks like I misread your post. I do agree June 2009 was a glory day period!

Due to the error, the above round 2 overflows are off, however, it would not effect the progress of the count, as Sewer would need 3 full votes just to tie Jake, and Jake clearly has overflow of his own, meaning on these ballots, TJ, and Jake would also be elected.

I guess there was kinda sorta not-really a competitive election between 20RP12 and Sewer for the 5th seat. Aren't they members of the same party even? lol? Looks like 20RP12 is easily going to win the 5th seat though.

What a dreadful bore. I'm even more convinced that the duel-dissolution would do a lot of good for this game now.

They weren't that much more interesting than at-large elections. You probably would have had at least one or two competitive elections that way, at least. But, when an at-large election is competitive it at least nationalizes the competition.

I did enjoy re-districting as Governor, though... :P

Sewer is trailing in the end place battle, and, on the first ballot. He would need to tie jake just to be in the race, and overtake him on the first ballot to have a serious chance of winning, and even then, a one vote lead might not be enough.

Also, I may be going back to bed.

If we were to go back to districts, I would definitely support gerrymandering them to be competitive. :P Too bad they would only be done once a year, so things can change in that department.

Each of these would be independent districts. The fact that two of them match the regions is coincidence.

I'm sort of surprised that the JCP didn't make a serious effort to elect Sewer.

I'm positively surprised. Most RPP and JCP voters have been surprisingly bi-partisan with their ballots. This time around, most voters considered the candidates' quality more important than in previous elections. There was no sudden write-in campaign just for the sake of retaining a seat. Instead, those candidates who campaigned in an active way were rewarded.

Several Points.  (1) It's important to remember however has the most votes, is Lt. Governor (which is a Rep now).  (2)  Dallasfan decided against accepting votes, so he won't be elected (unfortunately :P).

We're running this election under the new constitution, so I would assume Andrew would no longer be Lt. Governor.

Several Points.  (1) It's important to remember however has the most votes, is Lt. Governor (which is a Rep now).  (2)  Dallasfan decided against accepting votes, so he won't be elected (unfortunately :P).

I thought we decided he would continue a full term regardless.

I'm all confused inside now.

So, have we figured out when I'm out of a job yet?

I don't know how cutting your term short could be legally justified.

It was already assumed that Andrew would be serving a full term.  Unless there's a law that would prohibit him from finishing it, I don't think we can cut it short, like Napoleon said.

Of course, the Lt. Governor is technically suppose to be the rep with the most votes, but everyone who won a seat already swore in as reps.  So we have another legal conflict to deal with, it seems.

I think some pellets are confused by this, but the Lieutenant Governor is an Assemblyman. Like the Speaker, he or she is a Representative with "elevated" status but really no different.

I'm still a bit confused by it. If this all passed in the last Governors election, I'd imagine this would go into effect with the last election for the Assembly.

What if the rep with the most votes decides that they don't want the position (which I assume is allowed)?  Do we hold a special election held to fill a vacancy for the position, under the new law that was passed last session?

For the future, we should really include a transitional clause when going about this :P
