Americans are unimpressed with their political leaders' handling of the debt ceiling crisis, with a new CBS News poll showing a majority disapprove of all the involved parties' conduct, but Republicans in Congress fare the worst, with just 21 percent backing their resistance to raising taxes. () President Obama earned the most generous approval ratings for his handling of the weeks-old negotiations, but still more people said they disapproved (48 percent) than approved (43 percent) of what he has done and said. This is a difficult issue to poll because "Obama" is defined pretty well, but when you talk about the Republicans, who do you mean? - Mickey Cantor, Paul Ryan, Corburn, McConnell....? There is no "one" GOP voice so you really cant do any "head to head" polling that makes sense. Looking at the 8 most recent polls in the RealClearPolitics average: FOX News 45 46 -1 Gallup 42 48 -6 Rasmussen Reports 44 54 -10 USA Today/Gallup 45 50 -5 NBC News/Wall St. Jrnl 47 48 -1 ABC News/Wash Post 47 48 -1 Reuters/Ipsos 49 46 +3 Quinnipiac 47 46 +1 So, on average, a couple points "under water" Obama is in the grey area of polling where he is weak, but not dead - Rather similar to what Bush polled in 2004 - low enough to be worrisome, but high enough to give him a fighting chance. Again, this is hard to poll in the sense any damage to Obama is specific to Obama, while any damage the "Republican Brand" suffers may, or may not, translate onto the eventual GOP nominiee in 2012 Title: Re: Obama Winning PR War Over Debt Crisis, Poll Shows Post by: opebo on July 21, 2011, 10:57:22 AM Not quite sure I agree on that... Again, this is hard to poll in the sense any damage to Obama is specific to Obama, while any damage the "Republican Brand" suffers may, or may not, translate onto the eventual GOP nominiee in 2012 The point of the poll isn't really to predict the outcome of the 2012 election (which Obama will probably lose anyway, for other reasons), but to show that a majority of americans do understand who is causing their country to collapse. |
