The population loss in New Orleans after Katrina was worse than I thought.

Is 11 Cameron? I recall that it was one of the coastal Cajun parishes down that way.

Yep; It swung over 25% to McCain. Actually, Landrieu did better there in 2008 than 2002. Quite odd.

What actually makes it so much more than the other districts? Is the low African-American percentage the reason?

Politically, its similar to districts like NC-09, FL-04 or SC-01.

What we locals call the "north shore" (St. Tammany Parish) is an extremely red and very wealthy suburban area; voters there won't cross their ballots for any Democrat. It was the only parish to vote against Breaux in 1998 when he got 64%.

It also takes a big chunk of Jefferson Parish; those suburban Republicans would almost never vote for any Democrat either. Mary Landrieu actually won Jefferson in 2008 for the 1st time in her career, but Landrieu's perform disproportionately well in the New Orleans area.  

I was raised in LA-01 and my grandparents know Steve Scalise's parents.

LA-01 has given us David Vitter and Bobby Jindal :P

The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and (old) 7th were rural Dixiecrat districts which could still be won by the right type of Democrat.

The guys who LA-01 elects on the local level are just as bad.

Lack of competitive elections breeds both corruption and arrogance. It also encourages ideological extremism.

The Kingfish was Huey Long. He was assassinated in 1935. I'm not sure of any of the other remaining ones.

Vitter would be the only Republican Senator since the 1800's.

I would suspect that on any given Sunday more Baptists are in church than Catholics in Mass. You said "practise" didn't you?

Johnston, Breaux, and Russell Long [?] would be three of the four previous Senators.

My wild ass guess is the Vermillion is the largest parish. You said "largest," not "most populated."

Vitter was in Congress. Landreoux was Lt Gov?

- I'd give the Baptists a slight edge as far as actual turnout on Sunday too. As far as affiliation, last I checked, Catholics have a slight plurality.

- Elaine Edwards was technically Johnston's immediate predecessor; though she only served for 3 or 4 months. Before here it was Allen Ellender.

- Eh, that could have been interpreted a few ways; I should have been more clear. The "largest" Its actually Plaqiemines, if you include water area. After that, its a close call between Trebonne and Cameron.
