Title: Official 2011-2012 Club Soccer/Football thread
Post by: Lief 🗽 on August 19, 2011, 09:09:12 PM
Since the Premier League started again last weekend and the Champion's League qualifying rounds are currently happening. And of course Phil can feel free to talk about Serie A or whatever.

I've somewhat arbitrarily, somewhat not, decided to support Arsenal for the rest of my life starting this season, a decision which has already proven to be depressing and worrisome, which in the end is perhaps all we can hope for when following a sports team.

I typically support Liverpool in the EPL who incidentally play Arsenal tomorrow morning. Arsenal really looks on a downward trajectory. We shall see.

Some Eintracht supporter once told me that there is not much hate, or even rivalry, towards the FSV, and that he actually enjoys to visit their home matches and roots for them. Is that true / representative for Eintracht fans?

Liverpool have to be aggressive and go for three here. Frimpong is dying to get a red card.

Some Eintracht supporter once told me that there is not much hate, or even rivalry, towards the FSV, and that he actually enjoys to visit their home matches and roots for them. Is that true / representative for Eintracht fans?
Well, actually going to the occasional FSV match instead of forever talking about it and maybe getting to it once a year is not representative, no. :P (And even then, it's probably limited to us actual city dwellers, rather than the suburbanites.) I had a phase when I went to the FSV fairly regularly; then again that was a time when Stepanovic was gone from Eintracht and FSV were finally winning promotion to 2nd division again (you may recall how that turned out (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/2._Fu%C3%9Fball-Bundesliga_1994/95)). And I was still living in Bornheim, and was an active member of the FSV's hockey department.

Their is not much hate, or even rivalry, left. It's all too long ago. The FSV was relegated from the old Oberliga Süd in 1962, a year before the Bundesliga was formed, and had been a bottom-dweller there for much of the second half of its existence (the last duel was actually a cup tie... in december 62. 16 years before I was born to the day, as a matter of fact. Of course, there've been competitive matches of Eintracht II vs FSV and also Eintracht II vs FSV II since, but it doesn't count). Their last win against Eintracht was in 1955. It's a small miracle the club survived and maintained it's clear no.2 position at all, really.
If you look through the archives at sports coverage of the 20s and 30s though... um wow. It seems to have been one of the most hateful derbies around back in its day.

Quote

He needs to shoot the lock off his wallet.

They have to go up to Old Trafford next week too. And of course they could crash out of the Champions League this week.

Are you really going to find a better manager somewhere?

I'm excited to see how Chelsea will choke away a shot at a championship to Man. United this year. It's something different every year, so at least that's exciting. Although if they somehow win the Champions League, it'd be pretty much the sweetest vindication ever. Not holding my breath, though.

Let's just not confuse this with the Euro thread! That deserves to be separate.

And of course Phil can feel free to talk about Serie A or whatever.

I think this is why I always stopped myself from creating this type of thread. It will be me and occasionally another person commenting on Serie A.  :P

Here's to a total collapse this Wednesday then when they face Udinese.  :)

Yes. This will be for everybody's ramblings about the League football of their choice. Heck, if anybody cared they could even discuss US league football here.

Well, DC United is doing miserable this season so need to comment on MLS. :P

Of course so is Arsenal. Luckily there's a solution to that... (http://www.spendsomeingmoney.com/) Maybe not always being incredibly unlucky would be nice too. The two stretches when Arsenal was playing really well (the beginning and from 65 or so) were ended by an unlucky injury and that idiot getting a red card.

That was anticlimactic (http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/2bundesliga/spieltag/2-bundesliga/2011-12/5/1143031/spielbericht_fsv-frankfurt-1295_eintracht-frankfurt-32.html).
Though it mirrors the result of the very last league game before then.

Which part of the city do the fans of the smaller club come from? Or no real pattern?

Title: Re: Official 2011-2012 Club Soccer/Football thread
Post by: minionofmidas on August 21, 2011, 01:22:17 PM
Traditionally Bornheim. It's where the club is from. How true it is exactly I cannot say, probably some truth to it EDIT: make that "certainly some truth to it. Certainly they're all from the city proper. (In a blog comment I read yesterday, somebody was shockedly reporting the sighting of an FSV jersey in Dortelweil, not exactly an outer suburb.) Matters get more complex because FSV attendances are very low in absolute terms but a lot higher than they used to be - I've been to games in the 90s with ~400 people in the unreconstructed Bornheimer Hang ground, which could hold 15,000. But the club's 100% (in Frankfurt) name rec. and a general sympathy for it always existed. So there was always a degree of dormant fan potential, and these things tend to be passed down in families irrespective of current domicile.
And then there's the issue of just how ridiculously close the FSV and Eintracht "homes" are to each other (though Eintracht moved there in the 20s, starting out on a meadow where the Holzhausenviertel now is, and stopped playing their games there in the 60s when they moved south of the river. The youth teams etc still play at the Riederwald though, in the part that's technically in Seckbach.)

Accies is good but for me Inverness Caledonian Thistle edges a win there.
I regret though that they no longer dance on the streets of Total Network Solutions.

I'm not sure at what point I stopped paying any attention whatever to SPL - but it's been a while. I'm now vaguely aware who the defending champions are from year to year.

In other news...

Inter, Manchester United and Porto caught big breaks. AC Milan and Barca are lucky in that they are guaranteed qualification for the Round of 16.

Group D is probably a smaller Group of Death. While Group A is the real one, I think it's fair to say that Bayern Munich and Manchester City are more favored (the former being more of a favorite than the latter obviously). At the very least, it will be fun to watch.

Who might make it in via the green table, btw. Sion who beat them (and thus eliminated Scotland from group stages entirely :o while Ireland get a club in :o ) seem to have used a player they weren't allowed to use.

I had a long rant about the state of Scottish football that I wrote up and lost because it timed out. Celtic and Rangers both get knocked out by the powerhouse clubs of Sion and Maribor. Gross. It wasnt so long ago that Celtic was playing competitive football in the group stages of the Champions League. Celtic and Rangers both recently played in the European cup finals. The league has just dropped so far in talent. In short, I miss Martin O'Neill and Henrik Larsson.

P.s. Celtic doesnt deserve to get in on a technicality.

Judging by UEFA league co-efficients, about 5 years ago.

Presuming Celtic aren't put into the CL group stage, the SPL will collapse from being the 17th ranked league in Europe (around the likes of Austria, Cyprus, Israel and the Czechs) to around 30th (between the likes of Georgia, Finland, Bosnia and Ireland) at season end.

So apparently a certain MLS team that represents my city came back from being down three goals. A friend of mine just described it as the "most epic comeback in Soccer." Oh, these silly American Soccer fans.

The sad part is that this kid actually knows about real Soccer leagues/tournaments and still had the audacity to say that.

Fun fact: a friend of mine is dragging me to this team's game this Saturday. I can't believe I actually agreed to go. Of course, he is paying.

Wenger's deadline day signings:

An unknown Korean striker from the French leagues who's been injured for ages
A German centre half who's been on the market for ages with no takers
An injury prone midfielder who's been pretty much useless for the past 2 seasons
And an injury prone 31 year old bench warmer

Excited for the North London Derby tomorrow morning!

Few years ago would have been North London vs. France. Now they broke one of the last French still there (Sagna, which makes the 5th French player broken for next international matches of France team), beside Wenger, in case he finishes the year (he already has a job of commentator for a few years on TF1 anyhow, and wouldn't be surprised he succeeds to Laurent Blanc someday...).

Also English people pronounce "derby" strangely.

French as well. Pronounced kinda like 'dehr-bee'.

Italian and old is a lapalissade as we would say in French (way to say a redundancy).

Oh and, new not won match for Marseille!

Then, so far Marseille, one of the biggest French club, won against:

Evian Thonon Gaillard (1st year in L1)
Olympiakos (champion of Greece)
Borussia Dortmund (champion of Germany, 3-0)

...

And apparently Qatari millions would be profitable in Paris, won against the other big team right now, Lyon, yesterday, and they seem to be in a quite positive dynamic so far, and if I believe commentators, they don't only goal, they play well (life is unfair...).

And Qataris try to get Beckham!

A fashion victim in Paris, normal.

I would like to see faces of Parisian supporters with all those sudden Christmases suddenly happening to them, they were used to good old boring matches so far, with arrogant bad players, was kinda their way since the the late 90snow they have humble very expensive good players like Pastore...

How is Lugano playing in the PSG? He was a hero in both Sao Paulo and Fenerbahçe. And the captain of Uruguayan national team.

When he received the award to Uruguay for Fair Play in the Copa America another player joked that it was like Osama Bin Laden winning the Nobel Prize of Peace.

In real news, Napoli sadly lost a game at home that they should have won (especially after they scored a late equalizer) but the big game is Tuesday against Bayern Munich in Champions League play. If we find a way to win that one, it will be huge. :)

Well, at least the MLS isn't full of cheaters and match-fixing.

I really don't see how a soccer fan can oppose the MLS. The level of play is not comparable to the big five European leagues, but that's true of most countries' leagues. And the MLS is only helping soccer become more popular and more well supported in the United States, something which all American soccer fans should be supportive of. Also the games and atmosphere are pretty fun.

Let's hope it stays true. (They're down 1-0 away to Hanover as I speak.)

And there are also 2 red cards, 1 for each team.

Goalkeeper DeSanctis running back to the goal and saving the ball just ahead of the goal line ...

But, alltogether the Bayern win is OK I think.

Unfortunately, life as a campaign field director in the week before the election meant that I couldn't watch the game.  :(

I saw it was 3-1 before the half. From being down by three in the first half to only losing by a goal away against Munich is acceptable.

The scoreline really flatters Napoli. And Cavani is a diving c-word.

He isn't Italian though.  ;)

That clown Babstuber was whining earlier today about how "the Italians" dive when things get tough and we're naturally hot-headed. Ok, maybe that's true but he was undoubtedly referring to the Argentines and Uruguayans on the team, not Italians. Thanks again for that equalizer goal in Naples, dude. Hope you enjoyed the red card, too.

We had a rather unusual reason for a game cancellation today. Almost funny except that it's anything but:

The Cologne vs Mainz match was cancelled on account of attempted suicide by the referee.

Slit his wrists in his hotel room's bathtub sometime in the morning, to be precise. Motifs unknown so far.

There's always been a cup for all members of the Football League as was and one for potentially all teams (but not all in the same year). The latter (the FA cup) has always mattered more than the League Cup. It used to matter more than the title, to some people anyway.

Hmm, why do we always have to play the Ostblock ?

:P

Well, on paper our draw is not too bad - Metalist is strong, but can be beaten.

And in the last 16 we'll either play Olympiacos or Kazan.

Nah, tricky, all surprise teams are tricky. Especially unknown ones.

Disappointed.

Very fine to have OM-Inter though, typically the kind of teams that could fit OM and that could eventually, make them play, if they wish...

Lyon would be the best of the 2 French, with rather good players such as Bastos, Lisandro, Karlström, Gomis, etc, but they really are irregular.

Marseille hasn't found back his spirit from the early 90s, which awoke me to professional football, but they are always able of surprises, best ones like worst ones, not done, but doable.

I'm actually more hopeful (and anyways interested), in Marseille doing it against Inter than Lyon against Nicosia. ;D

Maybe that would at least do 2 players that wouldn't be afraid to come to OM then, it's been often recently said that several players didn't come to OM because they were scared of the security situation in Marseille...

Unless that's some of new jerseys used this year that scares them:

So we beat Stoke today and are now 8th in the league. This is a significant improvement on where we were a few months ago, to put it mildly.

But I think the time has come for some serious speculation about the relegation fight. Looks like a lineup of five clubs this season, though you can't entirely rule out one of those slightly above getting dragged down suddenly. It happens.

Heh. After 22 minutes we went up 2-1 (after being down 0-1 after 5 minutes, after having a goal cancelled for offside. Probably correctly, though what do I know? I've only seen it live in the stands), and I joked that it's freezing cold, we got the result we need, someone blow a final whistle already.
I was right. Nothing much happened during the remainder of the game.

Congrats to him if he succeeds not to be ousted after this year. Blanc would have to go further 1/4 finals in the Euro in case he wants to continue, because it already goes messy around him in the federation, so Arsène could quickly find a new job.

Arsenal without Arsène would just be weird. I never knew it. I knew Wenger, when, once upon a time, he was in Monaco though, and then moved to London, and brought all those good Monaco players with him (Henry and Petit for those I remind of). Maybe he should consider do the travel back, Monaco (which used to be in the top French clubs in the 90s) being...19th of...L2 now (yay!).

He was clearly a great manager at some point, probably one of the top 100 in the history of the sport, and I'm sure there's still a good manager in there somewhere, but someone has to take responsibility for this embarrassment and failure of a season, or we're just going to continue to muddle on over the summer, lose our remaining good players, and replace them at the last minute with more expensive mediocrities.

We beat Liverpool the other day, which was nice.

So, then. Who's done for this year? All the bottom three look utterly fycked, yet can we rule out a thrilling moment of fail from one of the B Class Lancashire clubs?

Looks as though Soton will be one of the replacements, which seems vaguely appropriate as they were once an absolute cast-iron fixture of top division football.

If Bayern wins in Dortmund, they will be 1st because of the better goal difference.

Wow, game just ended and an epic win by Dortmund.

Especially the final minutes were good: Penalty (which was mostly OK to be given) for Bayern and Robben's crappy shot saved by the Dortmund keeper. Then a Dortmund defender hits the Dortmund goalpost, ball bounces back and Robben again can't score from 2m away from the goal. And finally a Dortmund striker also hits the goalpost from Bayern ... :P

But Dortmund was clearly better in this game.

No. Points from 07-08 to 11-12 seasons determine who qualifies for what during 12-13, so you have two CL qualifier places in the summer of '13. :)

BTW, as an explanation for you Americans:

After a goal, the Bayern stadium speaker says "Goal for the FC Bayern München" followed by "Bayern" after which the fans say "1". Then the speaker says "Madrid" and the fans say "0" (which they say even if Bayern is up let's say 3:1 and Madrid just scored a goal). The speaker then says "Danke !" (Thank You !) and the fans shout "Bitte !" (You are welcome !")

I always shout the true answer if the opposition also has goals. And "Halts Maul" instead of "bitte".
Then again, I'm not at Bayern. At least they don't feel the need here to shout the scorer's name three times. (Cause you forgot the part about the announcer saying the first name and the stadium answering the last name of the scorer...)

Ah yeah, of course, the player's name.

I wonder if they do the same at American Football games. I never listened hard enough.

4-4? That's nothing. Riederwald lost 6-9 away to Nieder-Erlenbach in the Kreisliga A Frankfurt Staffel Südost last week. (But today, when I went to see them play for the first time this calendar year, they beat Posavina 1-0 on a penalty.)

And Wolves are gone. The moral of the story is that if you're in the middle of a relegation fight, you don't suddenly sack your manager unless you've got a replacement lined up.

The other two doom spots are remarkably open though, as Wigan and QPR have suddenly started to play well, as if on cue.

Alaba will also miss the Final now because he got a Yellow.

It really sucks that David Alaba misses the final. Once again, no Austrian in a final game of the CL.

The irony is that in yesterday's Kronen Zeitung newspaper ahead of the game, Alaba gave an interview in which he said that "if he has to accept a yellow card and therefore misses the final to help the team advance there, he'll willingly take that".

And then this self-fulfilling prophecy became true ... :P

Buffon gets cute, dribbling the ball in his box, has it stolen from him and third-from-the-bottom/down a man Lecce score an equalizer in Turin in the 86th minute. That one play might just cost Juve the Scudetto which I, of course, love. I also love Buffon, of course, but I have to enjoy this at his expense.

I have decided how to treat the CL final.

It is of paramount importance that Chelsea do not qualify for the Champions Leage, so if they manage to lose out in the league and depend on the CL final, I will be forced to root for Bayern.

Failing that, it would be very sweet to see Bayern come second in everything this year, so if they lose the German cup final they should lose the CL final as well.

And if both of these hopes are squashed before the final, I'll boycott it and call for lifelong bans of anyone who dares participate in this travesty. :P

Cologne relegated, Hertha somehow manage to hit the playoffs ranks after all (who against? That'll be decided tomorrow. Düsseldorf, Pauli and Paderborn all being fighting hard to escape promotion).
Düsseldorf will be the lucky sods.

boooooooo :(

Premier League results were basically perfect though.
Pauli "coolness" and "leftism" has a real history but today is 99.6% clever (and successful) marketing shtick.

Eh. Still better than D'doof.

The big action this Sunday is obviously the hunt for third in Serie A but having all of the Premier League games shown live on the FOX channels earlier in the day will be awesome.

As for Serie A, I like Napoli's shot at third. I think Lazio will either be beaten or draw at home against a hot Inter side while Catania can certainly beat Udinese in Sicily to wrap up a surprisingly good season. If we take care of business against Siena, we have third (due to a tiebreaker against Udinese).

Fox is even streaming a game (and a good one too, Everton-Newcastle) live and for free on their website! It's gonna be fun. Hopefully Newcastle, Arsenal, City and Bolton win and Tottenham lose. Don't care about the other games really.

German Cup Final today:

FC Bayern vs. Dortmund

Starts at 8pm local time in Berlin.

...

I have no clue how this plays out, but I'd favor an extension and penalties ... :)

I'll try a wildcard pick:

Bayern wins this 2:1, with David Alaba scoring in minute 87. If not Alaba, then Gomez.

The game is over and the Bayern women destroyed the Frankfurt women 2:0 !

Frankfurt was the big favourite though ... :P

It looks as if Chelsea will likely be out of Europe entirely unless they win this game.

Therefore they must not win it. Let's at least hope Bayern wins in a way that can't be used to spin the game as legendary in any way or form. Their last CL win may serve as a model.

Salzburg claim seventh Austrian title

(AFP) Sunday 13 May 2012

()

Salzburg claimed their seventh Austrian league title on Sunday after winning 5-1 at Wiener Neustadt in their penultimate game of the season.

The emphatic victory took them six points clear of nearest rivals Rapid Vienna, meaning they cannot be overtaken. Defending champions Sturm Graz, meanwhile, are 17 points off the pace in fifth position.

It was a fourth national title for Salzburg since the club were taken over by Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of the energy drink company Red Bull, in 2005.

Salzburg will attempt to complete the Austrian double for the first time in their history when they meet Ried in the Austrian Cup final on 20 May.

:)

Game just ended and Salzburg won 3:0 !

They are now the reigning Austrian League Champion and Cup winner.

Disgusting and disheartening. John Terry should never be given any trophies and Chelsea is an awful club. But Robben and Gomez should also feel bad for being so useless yesterday. They could have won the game like eight times.

If the Germans make it to the Euro final and lose that as well then half the squad will have come second place in four competitions in a row. Lahm, Schweinsteiger, etc. might just kill themselves after that. :(

Santos Laguna has defeated Monterrey to win the Clausura 2012 2-1 (aggr. 3-2) thus redeeming themselves from their loss in the CONCACAF Champions League against the same team and also winning their first final in the last 5 years after losing 3 finals in 6 seasons and 4th title overall.

()

Also Monterrey showed class after defeat going up to the ceremony and congratulating Santos in their win. Never has this been seen in any final at least in Mexico.

Bayern simply isn't allowed to win this. That's the only explanation for all of this.
Maybe tptb have decided that Chelsea must play CL, and have informed - not the referee, that would be too blatant - but the Bayern players of the fact. ;D

Can anyone that follows the loser league (MLS) let me know what's up with Chris Albright? My family has sat within yards of him on the same section of the beach since I was a kid and everyone talks about him like he's a star (Haha, American Soccer "fans"). I heard he was traded somewhere (maybe the Union) but, despite kicking the ball all over the beach all day, he must be injured since he isn't playing right now. Fill me in, boys.

...and Atlético-MG seems to have signed with Ronaldinho. Surprising, He was seen warming up today at the training center. As if our team wasn't already a joke for the last 12 years...

So, people looking for a dump to throw decadent players, come to BH! Who'll be the next, Ronaldo, Adriano?

Now that Cruzeiro had also become a crap, which made rooting against them pointless, and that our national team uses high heels instead of proper shoes, I think I'll have to fund another sport to watch. Any suggestions?

Austria vs. Turkey - hard to say.

Austria still holds quite a favorable balance against the Turks at home in Vienna.

5 wins so far, 2 losses and 1 draw.

Maybe 1:1 for today.

5 minutes into the game, Austria already leads Turkey by 2:0 ...

No joke.

After 1 minute, the Austrian with Turkish (!!!) origin Veli Kavlak scored and in the 5th minute, the Turkish goalkeeper was almost sent off the field by the referee because he badly fouled an Austrian striker. In the end he got the yellow card and the Austrian scored in the penalty shot.

What's up ?

Almost the 3rd goal by the Austrians, 15 minutes into the game.

Too bad it was ruled slightly offside.

Watch out Germany ! If we still play like this on September 11, we'll wipe you off the field ... !!!

The first half is over and Austria still ahead by 2-0.

The first 15 minutes were really interesting, the following 30 minutes not so much. There were many offsides, but nothing too dangerous on both sides.

Why is it mostly that players with ancestry of the opposing country score the goals against the opposing country ?

Yesterday, a Mexican American scored for the US against Mexico.

Yesterday, a Turkish Austrian scored for Austria against Turkey.

A while ago, Mesut Özil, a Turkish German, scored for Germany against Turkey.

And so on ...

Are they extra motivated to score against their country of origin ?

Apparently, Ron Zieler made history yesterday as the first ever German goalkeeper sent off in an international match.
There's a first time for everything, I suppose.
