Title: Which interpretation of the Sneakers O'Toole clip do you agree with most?
Post by: they don't love you like i love you on November 18, 2011, 11:18:11 PM
As it was being discussed again and is as I've said the single greatest clip in television history. Here's four theories I've read:

A: Sneakers O'Toole is a metaphor for the homosexual community. He will not "take his sneakers off" just as they won't change for society's demands. The men in the suits represent the forces of society trying to stop them, but as one realized it's inevitable of acceptance and they'll never catch or stop him.

B: Sneakers O'Toole represents Osama bin Laden. The clip is set pre-9/11 and he will not "take his sneakers off" and cease engaging in terrorism. The men in the suits represent the FBI and the CIA. They make no real attempt to stop him, just a demand and give up quite easily. He continues unabated. Seth is making a point about the failure of the intelligence community to protect America.

C: Conversely Sneakers O'Toole could also represent George W. Bush (who is also featured prominently in the rest of the episode) and his campaign for the Iraq War. He will not stop and is singlemindedly marching toward that goal. The men in the suits are the UN and the rest of the international community. They demand he stop, but he continues on any way just like a stubborn little kid.

D: Sneakers O'Toole is Seth poking fun at the idea of a "breakout character". In this case rather than creating a character who slowly grows in popularity and begins to play a much more prominent role in the show, he introduces an absolutely ridiculous character that gets everyone talking about him and wondering what he means. In that sense by withholding info Seth has already created the breakout character.

Tough call. All are pretty valid. I can't think of a deeper or more open to interpretation 20 seconds of TV.

Sneakers O'Toole, or Bróg O'Tuathail as we know him down at the local AOH club, was clearly making a statement about the illegal occupation of the six counties.

None of the Above.  It's a random clip.

Anywho, I didn't find the clip funny at all. More stupid than not.

I was thinking "B". It kind of embodies the notion of the futility of a seemingly easy task.

This is pretty much how my brother interprets books and I'm inclined to agree with him, though I haven't been forced into reading anything like Catcher in the Rye lately for me to encounter this type of thing.

It's an unfunny clip that you have an unhealthy obsession over.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Not to offend or attack you, Inks, but that picture is retarded.

Oh, there is a deeper meaning? I just thought it was a stupid, totally unfunny clip.

It's impossible for something to be stupid and unfunny.

I don't think I bumped it. Someone might have posted and then deleted their post.

OMG the first 20 seconds of this are like the most hilariously brilliant thing ever. I ran out of breath laughing. No clue why they had to tack nonsense on afterwards.
