Title: Ron Paul's vice presidential nominee
Post by: Adele is pudgy! on December 21, 2011, 09:07:59 PM
What will prevail?

Ideology or tactic?

PS: As far as I know, Paul couldn't choose Perry as they both have their main residence in the same US state.

None of these people. Jim DeMint, Gary Johnson, Andrew Napolitano, Jesse Ventura, and Bob McDonald are good choices.

Gary Johnson is listed above.
But who is Bob McDonald?

My first guess would be governor Butch Otter of Idaho. Extremely libertarian and has executive experience.

If Mike Pence weren't running for governor he'd get a look. Gov. Daniels should be spoken with. He needs a libertarian leaning so-con and DeMint fits that as would Pence (if he weren't running for gov) maybe Sam Brownback.

I think that Otter can be Paul, 1st choice, because choosing DeMint would kill Paul in needed-to-win states, like NH. Governor Corbett would be a good choice too, because he's one of 2010's governors that isn't embroiled in controversy (PA is more viable to a Republican gain than OH, because Paul would be seen as Kasich 2.0.).

Is he a Paulite?

Anyhow, if I were Paul I'd choose Buddy Roemer.  Seriously.

Roemer could help dispell the racist thing, with the "I lost to David Duke" arguement.

Either Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia or Jon Hunstman, Jr., to reassure Republicans in the event Ron Paul dies while in office of a ready, capable and reliably mainstream conservative successor.

This is all assuming, of course, that Ron Paul has a chance in hell of winning the nomination, let alone the general election.

I was thinking more that he's similar enough to Ron Paul's viewpoints that Paul wouldn't have to worry too much about a "heart attack" upon election, while also having a squeaky-clean personal life, not being a conspiracy theorist, and having "moderate" appeal.  He's also quite a good speaker and debater.

Yeah, he needs a VP fairly close in views or he'd almost certainly drop dead from some unknown malady after assuming office.

Walter Williams might be good were he not so old. Rand Paul would be a very lulzy VP.

Okay he is too dumb to go for strategy. Besides, no sane republican that isn't in the Ron Paul libertarian conspiracy boat would accept.

He'd ask Ventura, maybe Johnson. DeMint is probably the closets to a major republican that might accept/Paul would offer to.

Jim DeMint is the best choice. I think Mike Lee is another interesting choice, however.

One thing you learn in life is to never, never, never call a Puerto Rican a Mexican.

Never. Believe me, I came very close to learning that the hard way in 7th grade.

Living in South Florida, I have met many Hispanics (surprisingly, I know only 4-5 Cubans), and all of them agree on one thing--they hate Mexico. And it isn't always the "all Hispanics are Mexicans stereotype". Some of them just downright hate Mexico.

I wouldn't say I downright hate them, but don't call me Mexican. Maybe you did not get the hint that I'm Cuban. Now, you know another one... just online though. :P

DeMint has been coming closer to Paul's noninterventionist foreign policy. Pence would bring in the so-cons who are budget hawks as well (Think the Reagan alliance). Brownback brings more credence to Paul's pro-life cred.

Fortuno being Puerto Rican doesn't change the fact that, if he were Paul's running mate, the GOP base would decide to stay home rather than vote for Ron Paul and the Mexican.  But Paul isn't the panderer his rivals are and would probably shrug off the base's rejection of Mexicans and pick Marco Rubio (balance the ticket with someone who has a chance of ending up on the national ticket).

Mark Sanford would actually be a decent option re: picking someone who's establishment enough, but has gotten on well with Paul in the past.

Sanford was actually a dark horse VP option for McCain in 2008, and I'm sure there won't be any new skeletons in his closet that have arisen in the last four years.
