Title: The Tumultuous Election of 2012
Post by: Is Totally Not Feeblepizza. on January 29, 2012, 07:24:44 PM
Hi all, I'm a bit new and this will be my first attempt at a timeline. I hope you'll all enjoy it :).

January 31, 2012
FLORIDA PRIMARY RESULTS
Mitt Romney: 41.0%
Newt Gingrich: 34.7%
Rick Santorum: 13.6%
Ron Paul: 10.5%
(
)
Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts) 63 delegates
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Virginia) 23 delegates
Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) 6 delegates
Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas) 3 delegates

()
"We will continue this race on to Nevada, on to Maine, on to Colorado and Minnesota, and on to the general election, where we will defeat this failed President!"

()
"I would like to congratulate Governor Romney on his victory. It was a hard fight. We made it worth it. But we will press on, and we will win this election, not only in the upcoming primaries and caucuses but in November, where we can call ourselves rid of this failed, socialist dictator."

()
"I congratulate Governor Romney on his victory, and I sure do hope he'll be there to congratulate us on ours in Colorado and Minnesota."

()
"We may have lost Florida tonight, but mark my words: on February 4, we. Will. Win. In Nevada."

And so, the race for the presidency continues and Nevada is at the forefront...

Nevada, but he came extremely close, and we all know he's going to use that fact big-time going into Colorado and Minnesota and Maine later on. Especially, though, in Minnesota and Maine. That is where he definitely can win."

Newly released polling shows that Gingrich and Paul have benefited greatly from their good showings in Nevada; Romney has also experienced mild bumps, but Santorum has stayed mostly in the same place.

Just a suggestion--caucuses are notoriously hard to poll. The results shouldn't look like those polls.

"Over the past few days, I have been discussing with my family the future of this presidential campaign, and we have all come to the joint conclusion that our best course of action would be to announce my withdrawal from this race. I will endorse a candidate, and that endorsement will be announced this Monday."

In other news, Mitt Romney won the Guam caucus and all of its nine delegates. The delegate count now stands at 110 for Romney, 57 for Gingrich, 40 for Paul, and 22 for Santorum. Santorum's 22 delegates, however, will be free to vote for the candidate(s) of their choice at upcoming party conventions in their states.

"In 2012, there is only one man running who represents true, conservative Republicans and the family values that have made this nation strong. That man, ladies and gentlemen, is Governor Mitt Romney!!!" ~ Rick Santorum
()
Senator Santorum and Governor Romney appear side by side at a Romney event in Michigan. To the far left is Santorum's fellow former candidate Thad McCotter.

Santorum's endorsement brings mixed feelings. Many expected him to endorse Gingrich, but some say that this is not at all unexpected considering that Santorum made the same endorsement of Romney in 2008.

February 21, 2012
Newly released Santorum-free polls show that the race is still close, with Romney gaining a slim majority of Santorum's former supporters and Paul still fresh from his momentum off of Colorado and Minnesota on February 7.

March 3, 2012
WASHINGTON CAUCUS RESULTS
Mitt Romney: 38.8%
Newt Gingrich: 38.1%
Ron Paul: 22.7%
(
)
Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts) 176 delegates
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Virginia) 82 delegates
Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas) 51 delegates
Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) 22 delegates

Newtmentum, for all practical purposes, has indeed held on in Washington. The race, decided by a margin of just 0.07%, is just the newest reminder of how volatile and fluid this race really is. Polls taken in Super Tuesday states show that the race will continue to be close:
ALASKA POLL
Gingrich - 34%
Romney - 30%
Paul - 21%
GEORGIA POLL
Gingrich - 49%
Romney - 37%
Paul - 8%
MASSACHUSETTS POLL
Romney - 53%
Gingrich - 32%
Paul - 6%
OHIO POLL
Gingrich - 32%
Romney - 31%
Paul - 11%
OKLAHOMA POLL
Gingrich - 55%
Romney - 15%
Paul - 4%
TENNESSEE POLL
Gingrich - 49%
Romney - 21%
Paul - 6%
VERMONT POLL
Gingrich - 37%
Romney - 33%
Paul - 7%
VIRGINIA POLL
Romney - 64%
Paul - 9%
Overall, Gingrich seems the most likely to come out on top on March 6, with commanding leads in the South (save for Virginia, where only Romney and Paul are on the ballot). Ohio and Vermont are, unfortunately for Romney, tossups with Gingrich leading in both places.

"Yes, Governor Romney made impressive wins and Congressman Paul made impressive wins, and I called both to congratulate them where congratulation was due. But we won big as well, and that's why it's called Super Tuesday. We've proven that we're not just a regional campaign. We won in Vermont. We almost won in Ohio. If we'd been on the ballot in Virginia--which we should have been--we would have won there as well. But, looking ahead, things are impressive. We will win this primary and we will win in November."

Polls from the next batch of primaries, which will be held on March 13, are on the whole very optimistic for Gingrich. Gingrich is expected to win big in Alabama and Mississippi and hopes to eek out a victory in Hawaii, where the three candidates are locked in a virtual tie:

Oh wow, how stupid of me :P. Because I couldn't find any polling from Kansas, I used the 2008 results as a rubric--copy/pasting them into the post, plugging in the names of the candidates from my TL, and fiddling with the results as needed. Prior to winning the Illinois primary, Romney also gained a majority of delegates at the Missouri caucus on March 17 and all of the Puerto Rico primary's 23 winner-take-all delegates on March 18.

BREAKING NEWS: GINGRICH SERIOUSLY INJURED DURING ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AT PEORIA, ILL. CONCESSION
Michael O. Dawson, Jr. has been charged in an assassination attempt against former House Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. Gingrich, 69, was violently accosted just moments after conceding the Illinois primary to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney at a Peoria event. While Gingrich was stepping off the stage to greet his supporters, the 24-year old Dawson dumped a bag of glitter on the former Speaker before proceeding to shoot him twice in the neck and chest area with a Glock-23 handgun. Gingrich was rushed to the Peoria State Hospital and is apparently in critical condition...

Died: March 20, 2012 in Peoria, Illinois
10:31pm, Peoria, Ill.--Former U.S. House Speaker and 2012 presidential contender Newt Gingrich has passed away at the age of 69 after being shot by an assailant mere moments after conceding the Illinois primary to top rival Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.

Romney stated, "It is truly a regrettable event that a man of such pivotal importance in the conservative movement and in American history has had to pass at this time and in such a fashion. I know that my prayers are certainly with his wife Callista and his two daughters."

Fellow rival Ron Paul, a Texas congressman and leader of the libertarian faction of the GOP, said, "It is really a terrible thing to have somebody like Newt die in this way, and I hope his family heals soon."

Rick Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and 2012 candidate who withdrew from the race in February to endorse Romney, said, "I feel for Newt's family, and I'm praying for them so that they may find the strength to overcome this challenge. And, you know, it was only a matter of time before these glitter-bombers got violent. I think this is terrible."

President Obama is expected to speak from the White House very soon.

"Speaker Gingrich's assassination tonight was a sign of desperate times and division in this nation. We need less bickering; more unity. We need less hate; more love. We need less war; more peace. And, most of all, we need to call on the Lord to get us through it. We must pray so that Speaker Gingrich's family--his wife Callista, his daughters Kathy and Jackie, his grandchildren, and so many others--will have the strength to overcome the terrible sorrow and the many challenges that this event most certainly entails."

Pundits cannot help but note that the presidential race will now be in a total state of disarray. So many questions are being asked. Among them: when will it be appropriate for Romney and Paul to start campaigning again? How will the upcoming Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, D.C., and Wisconsin primaries turn out? Will Gingrich cruise to victory on sympathy? Where will Gingrich's delegates go? And more...

March 29, 2012
The RNC votes to release all of Gingrich's delegates, allowing them to vote however they choose. Some pundits call this a blatant pro-Romney move, as the vast majority of Gingrich's delegates will naturally choose Romney over Paul. However, immediately preceding the announcement the delegates are silent. Most hypothesize that they're waiting until April 3 to cast their votes.

April 3, 2012
MARYLAND PRIMARY RESULTS

Ron Paul: 35.9%
TEXAS PRIMARY RESULTS
Mitt Romney: 63.3%
Ron Paul: 35.9%
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PRIMARY RESULTS

WISCONSIN PRIMARY RESULTS

Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas) 198 delegates
Former Governor Buddy Roemer (R-Louisiana) 26 delegates
Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) 22 delegates
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Virginia) 0 delegates

All of Gingrich's delegates flee to Romney, with the exception of Louisiana's 24, one from Alabama, and one from Mississippi. Those delegates vote for Buddy Roemer, and are able to keep Romney one delegate away from becoming the nominee.

()
"We will win this! We will win this yet!"

()
"I think I've made it clear before that we're not going to concede until Governor Romney has that 1,144th delegate."

()
"First of all I'd like to reiterate my concern for the Gingrich family, and I'd like to say that I hope they recover from the Speaker's unfortunate death soon. And secondly I thank his delegates for their support, even under these circumstances, and even if this may be too little too late at this point."

Polls show that Romney is leading by hefty margins in the Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island primaries on April 24. Roemer consistently polls close to Paul, however.

Mitt Romney announces that Luis Fortuño will be his running-mate. Fortuño, the 51 year old governor of Puerto Rico, comes entirely out of left-field but is still applauded as a smart choice. Fortuño is Hispanic, is to the right of Romney, and exhibits a perfect balance between youth and experience.

August 27-30, 2012
The Republican National Convention is held in Tampa Bay, Florida. New Jersey governor Chris Christie, the keynote speaker, and vice-president nominee Luis Fortuño draw far more applause than Governor Romney. Other speakers include John McCain, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, and former President George W. Bush.

September 3-6, 2012
The Democratic National Convention is held in Charlotte, North Carolina. President Obama and Vice-President Biden are renominated with little ado, although antiabortion candidate Randall Terry stage small protests outside the Time Warner Cable Arena and the Bank of America Stadium. The keynote address is delivered by former DNC chair and 2012 Senate candidate Tim Kaine of Virginia. Other speakers include State Secretary Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, and New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

Newly released polls show that the presences of strong third party candidates in Johnson and Roemer hurts Romney's chances, throwing states like Tennessee and Texas into the swing column.

He got 23% in a New Mexico poll, and I think 7-8% in a Texas poll. A Tennessee poll showed that 23% would vote for a "qualified independent" in an Obama/Romney match-up. So I think these numbers are pretty realistic.

Throughout September, Romney campaigns hard in the swing states. The presence of Fortuño on the ticket helps Romney greatly in western states--Nevada, Colorado, and Texas--as well as in Florida. Johnson focuses mainly on libertarian leaning states in the west and northeast, as well as on the only states where he has emerged in double digits (New Mexico, Texas, and Tennessee). Obama, like Romney, works in the swing states. He also works to make sure that Texas and Tennessee remain close. Roemer, who is not on the ballot in every state, focuses mostly on the larger states where he has been granted access. By the first debate on October 3, the map looks like this:
(
)
President Barack Obama (D-Illinois)/Vice-President Joe Biden (D-Delaware) 224
Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-Massachusetts)/Governor Luis Fortuño (R-Puerto Rico) 188
ARIZONA POLL

IOWA POLL

Johnson - 1%
MISSOURI POLL
Romney - 46%
Obama - 44%
NEVADA POLL
Obama - 43%

Johnson - 2%
Roemer - 1%
NEW MEXICO POLL
Obama - 42%
Romney - 26%
Johnson - 25%
Roemer - 1%
NORTH CAROLINA POLL
Romney - 48%
Obama - 46%
OHIO POLL
Romney - 43%
Obama - 37%
Johnson - 1%
Roemer - 1%
PENNSYLVANIA POLL
Romney - 44%
Obama - 43%

Romney - 30%
Johnson - 24%
TEXAS POLL
Romney - 45%
Obama - 35%
Johnson - 13%
VIRGINIA POLL

Romney has bounced back, overcoming Johnson and once again becoming competitive with Obama in terms of the actual Electoral College vote. Roemer, so far, seems to be a non-factor. Romney hopes that, with a good debate performance on October 3, he will be able to further close the gap...

Didn't the GOP learn their lesson of picking no-names as VP candidates?  I personally like Fortuno, but might he pick someone with a higher profile, but not too high (Jindal, etc.)?  Otherwise, I'm really enjoying this TL

Eh. I really thought that a Hispanic running-mate would be great, and Fortuño was the only potential I could think of who hadn't been elected just in 2010.

Anyway, thanks for reading! Next update: the debates!!! :D

This update is LONG overdue. Here you guys go! :D

October 3, 2012
()
The first presidential debate, held at the University of Colorado in Denver, centers on foreign policy. President Obama defends his withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S.'s successful role in toppling the Qaddafi regime in Libya, and--more so than anything else--his order to kill Osama bin Laden in May 2011. Romney, on the other hand, criticizes Obama for "hastening" withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan, stating that "now those nations are just two bloodbaths". He also said that the U.S. "went soft" on Libya, claiming that "we could have, and should have, taken Qaddafi down ages earlier than when we actually did".

Overall, voters seem to think that Obama won that debate.
Who won the debate?
Obama - 41%
Romney - 37%
No one -  15%
Undecided/No opinion - 7%
(
)
President Barack Obama (D-Illinois)/Vice-President Joe Biden (D-Delaware) 224

PENNSYLVANIA POLL

After what most would term a mediocre debate performance, Romney has slipped and the crucial state of Ohio now has strayed into swing state territory. Johnson continues to increase his prevalence in the race, with Roemer still remaining a mere also-ran.
