Title: Are you disgusted by the movie "Act of Valor"?
Post by: I spent the winter writing songs about getting better on February 26, 2012, 02:50:01 AM
Yes in a way I haven't been since the last Friedberg and Seltzer monstrosity. It's quite refreshing though to see the reviews thrashing this piece of jingoistic propaganda garbage.

If a movie that puts our military's special operators in a positive light is "disgusting" to you then we can't agree on too much.... other then the fact that Opebo is a cool dude

It wasn't so much that it was in a positive light as it was that it lacked any sort of nuance (not even moral nuance, just basic plot nuance) even by the standards of action movies and was a completely stupid thing for the Navy to let SEALs spend their time on.

After having watched the trailer on YouTube and read it up on Wikipedia it seems to me that it just a very expensive two-hour advertisment for the U.S. Navy.

Plus the plot based on what bits I heard sounds more like it's from a video game, not a supposedly "realistic" move about military action. Apparently the SEALs go all around the world fighting "associates" of the terrorists including Mexican drug cartels, Chechen rebels and Filipino suicide bombers. (yes there are Islamists in the Philippines, but they tend not to use suicide bombing as a tactic.)

Also look at the soundtrack for proof of jingoistic nonsense.

I mean, if you want to watch propaganda, you might as well watch a movie with great dialogue like Top Gun or something.

No, but there are better movies/documentaries out there if you want to see our military cast in a positive (though realistic) light, like Band of Brothers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185906/) and The Pacific (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374463/).

Not surprising this POS opened at #1, though the competition sucks.

No good movies for quite awhile, or recently, not surprising that a French silent film won Best Picture really. I think The Onion brilliantly summed up that stupid-looking Project X well "What does a house party look like in the YouTube era? Answer: Just like every other house party."

Yeah, I don't know why the marketers think I'm in the wheel house for Project X....I can't seem to escape commercials for the amazingly stupid looking movie.  It looks like somebody took the worst parts of the Hangover (of which they were many) and Superbad, had a first year film student write a script and then filmed it with a handheld at the youngest producer involved in the films house.  There aren't even any "jokes" in the trailers...isn't it supposed to be funny?  At least Jack and Jill gave us a (weak) joke or two when they overloaded us with advertisement.

They're trying viral marketing like this is some type of revolutionary new film (see the name even), when all it's about is a bunch of kids throwing a party. Yeah, that's original and has never been done before!

They must have spent $30 million in advertising....<checks>....meh..can't find anything.  $12 mil to make it....I'd be shocked if they didn't double that in marketing.

(oddly enough, I did see that Act of Valor was purchased from a low end studio for $13 mil and then they (the buyers) went and spent $20-30 mil in marketing for it and I bet I've seen 10 commercials for Project X for every 1 I've seen for Act of Valor.)
