Title: Opinion of the J. J./jfern coin flip debate
Post by: I spent the winter writing songs about getting better on March 13, 2012, 11:48:29 PM
I think that was the single stupidest debate in forum history, and that includes the "debates" that Derek and HoffmanJohn were involved in.

You are aware that the incident in question was so long ago many members won't have any idea what you're talking about, right? Hell, I barely remember the debate.

the numbers 940 and 60 are getting shot out in the synapses of my brain.  anyway I don't think BRTD filters his content with the concern of how many people will be able to relate to what he is talking about; in fact, a large degree of his charm is to be so esoteric as to elude a general sense of understanding.

it was bloody.  this thread was a key epicenter for a time of the marathon debate, which occurred in 2005.

Calling anything involving J.J. a "debate" does injustice to the word and concept.

also in re-reading it it makes me mad nostalgic for the lassiez-faire days when we could attack each other.

Yeah, J. J.'s constant usage of "jFRAUD", would no doubt be infracted for personal attacks and/or trolling today. Which I don't have a problem with since it did significantly lower the quality of discourse on the forum, but it does show how much of a joke Moderate Hero era the forum was in since everyone knee-jerkedly sided with J. J. just because jfern had a reputation as a somewhat abrasive hack (which might've been true, but I don't think anyone would argue that doesn't apply to J. J. today either)

Some folks need to take more statistics courses. I really love statistics myself, and loved the courses I took, and have worked on it more since in recent years when I had more time, with some assistance from those more knowledgeable than I. It is a beautiful thing - as long as it is not abused - or spun.

^Surely you know this is a fantasy by now :)

I remember the debate in question and avoiding it like the plague.

For the record I can see why jfern's whole coin flip analogy was a poor one from a statistical standpoint (for example no one would argue that a car that doesn't start 9 times out of 10 attempts doesn't have engine trouble, or even if it only starts 5 times out of 10 attempts it has obviously engine problems as well. The key is the null hypothesis.), but rather than just point this out J. J. just used it and jfern's then unpopularity as an excuse to be an immature gloating, "jFRAUD" spewing jerk.
