Title: 2012 Major League Baseball Discussion Thread
Post by: Joe Biden 2020 on April 03, 2012, 07:29:19 PM
The season officially gets underway in earnest tomorrow evening, Wednesday, 4th April, 2012 with the Defending World Champion St Louis Cardinals visiting the Miami Marlins on ESPN at 7:00 pm EDT, 6:00 pm CDT.

I couldn't find the previous thread we had for this topic, so I decided to create a new one.

I, for one, can't wait for Emmanuel Burriss to start at second base. I can't believe that the Giants are going to have Burriss, Brandon Crawford and Ryan Theriot for their middle infield. They're all terrible. Mike Fontenot was better than all of them, but the Giants cut him. I think they're actively trying to lose. This may be a Major League situation, considering that Brandon Belt is projected to be one of the best hitters in the National League but he'll be starting the year in Fresno.

Prediction for this year: 79-85

posted my picks on Facebook: took Texas over San Fran in the World Series.  Belt will be up before the end of April, there is only so long he can be held back.  Sabean's always been a fool.  Barry Zito renaissance this year.

My prediction is that Belt is traded in July for a relief pitcher. He'll never get 500 plate appearances in a season in San Francisco, and that prediction is completely serious.

Zito has nothing left. His contract was never good, but there was a time when it wouldn't have been ridiculous to think that he could be a very useful pitcher; on May 10, 2010, his ERA for the season was 1.49, and as late as August 10 his ERA sat at 3.35. That's gone now. The Giants will break camp with an extra pitcher so that they can cover for Barry Zito's first start in Colorado. I don't think it needs to be said how ridiculous that logic is.

I could have sworn I remembered Chan Ho Park throwing a no-hitter on opening day sometime between 1998-2003. A quick glance at Baseball Reference indicates that this is not the case, nor has he even thrown a no-hitter. I honestly might have just conflated real life with a video game.

I can't see the Cardinals doing it again, what with Puljos and LaRussa leaving...but we still have some good/great pitching and a decent team.  And really, we had little buisness winning it last year....so, like usual, I'll start paying attention come late August.

Title: Re: 2012 Major League Baseball Discussion Thread
Post by: useful idiot on April 05, 2012, 06:56:42 AM

I wish that were the case, but it isn't. Their pitching isn't consistent enough to make up for their offensive inconsistencies. Hanson will only win between 10-15 games, Hudson is old enough that every season is going to be a crapshoot and he's already injured, Beachy is largely an unknown quantity over a full season, and Jurrjens had a great year last year but his 2010 season was quite bad. Kimbrel is obviously one of the best relievers in the game but that can only dig you out of so many holes. When half your lineup is batting .250 and even those guys can't stay healthy, it doesn't bode well.

However I will say this. The Braves are extremely consistent in that over the last 4 or so seasons they've gone on an unbelievable hot-streak at some point in the year. Last year it was in the middle of the season, in 2010 at the end until they got into the playoffs and bombed, and 2009 it was coming down the stretch until the last two weeks and they blew it. If they can get hot right before the playoffs as opposed to a month out, then we'll talk.

I don't know how anyone who has been a Braves fan for any length of time can be optimistic. I mean this was the team that absolutely dominated the NL for a decade, had one of the top 5 pitchers of all time (alongside two other HOFers), and only got one ring out of it....

It was a pretty good Opening Day for the 2012 MLB Season.  I was able to watch the majority of the Dodgers vs. Padres game this evening with Vin Scully as the announcer.  I'm looking forward to what Friday will bring us.  I'll be able to catch the Kansas City Royals vs. Los Angeles Angels matchup with the Angels debut of Big Al.  I'm also hoping the Cardinals can go into Milwaukee and show Milwaukee who's boss.

I am pleased with how the St Louis Cardinals are doing 14 games into season.  A record of 10-4 and on top of the NL Central.  It is still extremely early, but if we can keep this consistency of winning 3 out of every 4 nights, we'll be in pretty good shape in the second half of the season.

My O birds are finally starting to look serious! I can't believe they've ridden their usual early-season success this long this year. First place in the wild card this deep into the season is just absurd for such a disappointing team. I'm still just preparing myself for an even more heartbreaking collapse though.

Neither should Melky Cabrera, as a matter of fact. He's been good, but he's not one of the top three outfielders in the league.

That said, Pablo Sandoval was far and away the best third baseman in the league in 2009, but David Wright started the All-Star Game while Sandoval didn't even make the team; forgive me if I'm not sympathetic now.

I don't get it. Wright was having a better year and, imo, deserved to start. Just as DW, as you previously stated, had no business starting (or even being in) the AS game in '09.  This is an aspect of fan voting that I don't like.

While it would have been nice to see RA start as a Met fan, I really saw nothing wrong at all with Cain starting.  He is clearly a more reliable option, and I'm certainly happy that the Giants came up big for the senior circuit.

It warmed my heart to see Verlander get squashed. I can't stand that guy. Also, pretty much every Texas player failing miserably, especially Harrison, was nice too.

I'm just disappointed Verlander had to waste that disastrous performance in a game that doesn't count instead of putting one in the L column for Detroit. I guess it could have been worse if it had happened against the White Sox.

Justin Verlander is on my fantasy baseball team, so I'm glad he didn't waste the poor start. :)  I've gone from 9th to 3rd in just a month, because of him and RA Dickey.

Dillon Gee (the Mets fourth starter) likely goes down for the year just as it appeared he was starting to put in together. I really hope this isn't the start of a 2nd half collapse because this has been a real fun team to watch.

This is from the Twitter of a Giants beat writer

Quote
CSNBaggs I asked [Bruce] Bochy if [Hector] Sanchez’s bat is preferable to [Brandon] Belt’s. “Yeah, I think that’s fair to say. Wouldn’t you?”

Brandon Belt is hitting .250/.360/.408
Hector Sanchez is hitting .278/.282/.381

It's easy to say that we would do better than the management at their jobs, but I'm pretty sure I would be a better manager than Bruce Bochy.

Posey is a better catcher than Sanchez & Belt is a better first baseman than Posey. Better bat or not, the Sanchez/Posey experiment is tempting fate with its error potential.

It's an offensive downgrade and a defensive downgrade! Hector Sanchez has done literally nothing well this year!

I've actually developed a Zen like acceptance and calm at seeing the bullpen blow every game. Sadly, this is likely the end of any playoff dreams.

Sanchez is on the 15-day DL & now we're starting Whiteside at C and Posey at 1B. Whiteside, the guy who was hitting .241 in AAA at Fresno. I'd probably ask for a trade if I were Belt.

All I can really say about baseball is, if the Pirates continue to play this way, there'll be a parade in Pittsburgh at the end of the year honoring them for finally not being pathetic.

That would be hilariously patronising, the city of the Penguins and Steelers parading around a team for being OK.

It was good to see my Cardinals destroy the Cubs with a 12-run 7th inning tonight.  The final score?  12-0!!
